Diamond Dogs Take Series Opener at Old Dominion

Box Score April 14, 2017

Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. - Louisiana Tech (22-12, 5-8 C-USA) got off on the right foot this weekend thanks to some timely hitting from senior leaders with a 7-3 victory on Friday night over Old Dominion (25-10, 9-4 C-USA) in Norfolk.

Chase Lunceford picked up three RBI in the win, thanks in large-part to a two-out, two run-bomb, his eighth home run of the season.

Jordan Washam also came through with a two-out, RBI-single, as the senior collected a pair of hits.

Sean Ullrich was the third Bulldog to come up with a two-out, two-run hit, as his two-run single was part of a two-hit day for the right-hander.

Casey Sutton picked up his fifth win on the season after getting the start and going five innings. Sutton allowed just two runs over that stretch.

Old Dominion got on the board first, using back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

The Bulldogs struck back though in the top of the third. After Jordan Washam sent the first pitch of the inning to the gap in right center, Brent Diaz brought him home with a one-out double down the left field line.

Later in the inning, Marshall Boggs drew a walk and scored on a two-run home run by Lunceford to right field. The two-out, two-run shot gave Louisiana Tech a 3-1 lead.

The Monarchs struck back in the bottom half though, on a solo home run from Vinnie Pasquantino, that cut their deficit to 3-2.

There was more two-out run production for Louisiana Tech in the top of the fourth. Cody Daigle walked to open the inning and later scored from third on a two-out RBI single by Jordan Washam.

In both the bottom of the fourth inning and bottom of the fifth inning, Old Dominion got two runners on with nobody out. In both innings, Casey Sutton navigated through the rest of the frame unscathed.

After two quiet innings, Raphael Gladu poked a one-out single through the right side to reach base. Consecutive walks to Diaz and Boggs loaded the bases with just one out in the inning.

Lunceford picked up his third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly that scored Gladu. Ullrich then brought home both Diaz and Boggs on a two-out, two run single up the middle. The three runs in the top of the seventh gave Louisiana Tech a 7-2 lead.

Old Dominion loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Kent Hasler came on and got the final out of the inning to help the Bulldogs escape without allowing a run to cross.

The Monarchs got a run in the ninth, but Hasler picked up his second save on the season to preserve a 7-3 win.

First pitch on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. CT with Cam Linck set to take the bump. The game will be streamed on CUSA.TV and broadcast on ESPN 97.7 FM.
