LA Tech Hosts Troy in Three-Game Weekend Set
2/22/2019 3:22:00 PM | Baseball
RUSTON, La. – The Louisiana Tech baseball team will play host to its first weekend series of the 2019 season, welcoming the Troy Trojans for the first ever meeting between the two programs. Due to weather, Friday's opener was postponed and the teams will now play a single game on Saturday (3 p.m.) followed by a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. from J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Game Notes
LA Tech (4-0) most recently defeated UL-Lafayette 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday evening, while Troy's originally scheduled midweek contest with Southern Miss was canceled due to weather. Despite being outhit 10-5 on Wednesday, the Bulldogs utilized timely hitting and capitalized on some Cajun miscues to walk off on Mason Robinson's game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Trojans (2-2) are coming off a 2018 season that saw an at-large NCAA Tournament bid and a 42-21 overall record. Troy opened 2019 with a four-game split against Central Michigan, taking the first two contests in one-run decisions (3-2, 7-6) before falling twice (3-5, 2-5) to split the weekend set.
The Bulldog offense is off to a roaring start so far in 2019, ranking 18th nationally with 48 base hits, 12th nationally in scoring (10.8 runs per game - first among C-USA), and ninth in runs with 43. A large portion of that offensive success has come in the middle innings, as Tech has outscored its opponents 24-0 over the course of the 5th-7th innings so far this season.
The Tech bullpen has been a bright spot so far for head coach Lane Burroughs and first-year pitching coach Mike Silva. Tech has used seven different relievers that have combined for a 2.22 ERA through the first four games of the season. Tyler Follis (1-0, 10 K, 0 BB) has posted two quality relief outings and will look to carry that success into a starting role on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a pair of Tech starters will be looking to get back on track after southpaws Logan Robbins and Logan Bailey got roughed up on opening weekend against Southeastern.
All three contests will be streamed live on CUSA.tv (subscription required). Fans can tune into KNBB 97.7 FM or listen through the LA Tech X Mobile App. Teddy Allen will have the call for Saturday's game, while Dave Nitz will be back in the booth for Sunday's doubleheader.
