Bulldogs Take on Warhawks in Monroe

RUSTON, La. – As winners of 10 of their last 11, the Louisiana Tech baseball team will look for a little revenge, taking on the ULM Warhawks in a road matchup from Warhawk Field in Monroe set for Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on KNBB 97.7 FM with Dave Nitz on the call.

LA Tech (24-11, 10-5 C-USA) has been on a tear since its first meeting with the Warhawks (15-20, 5-9 Sun Belt), which ended in a 9-4 ULM victory in Ruston. Since that game, Tech has rattled off wins in 10 of its last 11 games, including a 10-game winning streak which was the longest by a Tech squad since the 2007 season.

Tech received some national recognition after the strong start to the month, as Collegiate Baseball ranked the Bulldogs 21st in their latest poll. Tech is also receiving votes in the NCBWA Top 30 Poll.

All-time, Tech leads the overall series with the Warhawks, 104-77.

The Bulldog offense has come alive in the month of April, as Mason Mallard (.379), Taylor Young (.338), Mason Robinson (.328) and Tanner Huddleston (.311) are all hitting .300+ as mainstays in the Tech lineup.

Huddleston was named the C-USA Hitter of the Week after pacing Tech to a 4-1 record and its seventh consecutive C-USA road series triumph, dating back to last season.

The senior slugged a team-best .875 last week, on the strength of three extra-base hits in four games (1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR), leading the team with 14 total bases. His on-base percentage also paced the Bulldogs, at a clip of .556.

After a slow start to the season, Huddleston has erupted in his last 16 games. Following the Southern Miss series to open conference play, Huddleston's average sat at .211. Since that time, Huddleston is hitting .403 (25-for-62) with 15 RBI, boosting his season average north of .300, currently at .311.

In Conference USA games, Huddleston is hitting .309 and leads the team with 13 RBI.

In conference play, Tech starting pitching has also stepped up its play, led by Friday night starter Matt Miller (3.35 ERA, 5-0), who has allowed just nine earned runs in his five C-USA starts.

Tech is slated to throw left-hander David Leal (0-0, 6.10 ERA, 10.1 IP, 16 K, 1 BB), making his third start of the season since returning from a broken foot suffered just before the start of the season. For his career, Leal leads all D1 pitchers with the fewest walks per nine innings at 1.29. In 2018, Leal's strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.23 (81 K, 13 BB) ranked second in Conference USA and 22nd among all national leaders.

ULM will send junior left-hander Cole Martin (0-3, 9.00 ERA, 20 K, 12 BB) to the bump, making his seventh start of 2019.

The Warhawks are winners of four of their last six contests, most recently dropping two league games to Appalachian State in a weather-impacted weekend series.
