Three Bulldogs Recognized in All-Louisiana Baseball Awards

RUSTON, La. – Three seniors from the Louisiana Tech baseball team continued to be recognized for stellar 2019 seasons, as RHP Matt Miller, first baseman Mason Mallard and RHP Braxton Smith earned spots on the 2019 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana College Baseball Team, the LSWA announced Sunday.

Miller and Mallard were both first team selections, while Smith was voted honorable mention among all college baseball teams in the state of Louisiana. The Bulldogs were one of just three teams with multiple first-team honorees.

Mallard, the club leader in batting average (.374), slugging percentage (.545), on-base percentage (.470), runs (65 – most by a Bulldog in a single season since 2007), hits (83 – tied for 6th most in program history), total bases (121) and stolen bases (20-for-26, 45 career – 7th most in program history), most recently signed a professional contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tech senior started every game at first base in 2019, playing a position he picked up less than a month prior to the start of the season, and recorded a fielding percentage of .984, making just eight errors in 499 chances.

The Conference USA First Team member was named the league's Hitter of the Week on May 13th and twice named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Hitter of the Week. Mallard also picked up national honors as Collegiate Baseball recognized the senior as one of its National Players of the Week on May 13th.

Miller, a member of the All-C-USA second team, spent the bulk of the 2019 season as Tech's Friday night ace. Among league leaders, Miller ranked sixth in ERA (3.24), fourth in opposing batting average (.224), seventh in innings pitched (83.1), fifth in strikeouts (97) and first in strikeouts looking (38). His 97 punchouts this season were the most by a Bulldog pitcher since 2007 (Luke Burnett – 115).

Smith, one of the most electric bullpen arms in the country, was named First Team All-Conference after a regular season that saw him post 10 saves along with a sub-three ERA at 2.95. Smith's 10 saves were second-most in C-USA. The right-hander was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason List, recognizing the nation's top relievers.

The senior was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week on April 8th after picking up three saves in two days. Smith struck out 53 over his 36.2 innings pitched. Opponents mustered just a .223 batting average off the Tech closer.
