RUSTON –
Jonathan Fincher been named to the watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, the association announced Monday.
The award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball. UCLA's Holden Powell took home the trophy in 2019.
Fincher, a 2019 Conference USA All-Freshman Team selection, finished last season with a 2.78 ERA and 3 saves in 32.1 innings of work. He struck out a school-record 14.20 batters per nine innings while coming out of the bullpen.
The redshirt sophomore has been tabbed as an Opening Day starter by head coach
Lane Burroughs, but could return to the bullpen later in the season.
Fincher and the Diamond Dogs open the 2020 season on the road this weekend, traveling to UL-Lafayette for three games in two days. Tech's first game of the year will be on Saturday, Feb. 15 against the hosting Ragin Cajuns.
