LA Tech Baseball Hosts No. 4 Ole Miss on Tuesday

RUSTON, La. – Fresh off of its first win over a No. 1 team in program history on Sunday, the Diamond Dogs again get the chance to knock off a top-five team when the Bulldogs host No. 4 Ole Miss on Tuesday night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 6 p.m. The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to play the Rebels on both Tuesday and Wednesday, but COVID-19 concerns within the Ole Miss baseball program motivated the Rebels to cancel Wednesday's contest of the two-game series.
Tuesday night's game will be streamed live on CUSA.tv.

Louisiana Tech continues its grueling stretch of four games in five days against top-five teams in the Love Shack. LA Tech is coming off its first win over a No. 1 team in program history after blanking Arkansas 2-0 at home. Bulldog starting pitcher Jarret Whorff delivered a performance of a lifetime to shut down the Hogs, striking out 10 batters while allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout of the previously undefeated Razorbacks.
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper named Whorff a National Player of the Week following his performance on Sunday. Conference USA also tabbed the Winnsboro, Texas native as its Pitcher of the Week. Whorff has now thrown two complete-game shutouts in his career at LA Tech despite just making eight career starts in a Bulldog uniform.
The Bulldogs went 2-2 this past week, dropping a pair of games to No. 1 Arkansas following a 10-3 midweek victory at ULM. The Bulldogs held a late lead over the Razorbacks on Friday, but Arkansas rallied to notch a 9-7 win in 10 innings. LA Tech dropped Saturday's contest 8-1 before Whorff dominated the top-ranked Hogs to move to 9-5 on the season.
LA Tech has tallied 29 multi-run innings in just 14 games this season, putting up three such innings against the Razorbacks over the weekend. Philip Matulia paces the 'Dogs with a .378 average, two triples and a 1.042 OPS. Leadoff batter Taylor Young ranks first on the team in hits (19) and runs scored (17). Young also has recorded a team-high four home runs during the 2021 season.
Sunday's win over Arkansas also moved the Bulldogs to 7-2 at home this season, marking win No. 850 in the history of Tech's home at the corner of West Alabama and Tech Drive. Tech's seven wins at the new Love Shack add to a total of 843 triumphs at the previous park.
The Bulldogs are 9-22 all-time against the Rebels with the most recent game coming in 2003. Ole Miss has won four of the past five games in the series with the Bulldogs notching a 7-4 victory at home in 2001 for their most recent victory over the visitors from Oxford, Mississippi.

The Rebels won all three of their matchups at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown in Arlington, Texas, to open the year. Ole Miss knocked off No. 10 TCU, No. 3 Texas Tech and No. 9 Texas to kick off its season with an impressive start.
The Rebels, however, will enter Tuesday's game coming off a loss. Ole Miss dropped its final game of the weekend to Tech's I-20 neighbor and recent opponent, ULM. Ole Miss' other two losses of the season came in a series loss to UCF at Swayze Field.
Six Rebels with at least 23 at-bats this season are batting over .300. Senior Tim Elko is crushing the ball in 2021, tallying a team-high seven homers, 24 RBI, 45 total bases and 18 runs scored.
On the mound, the Rebels hold a 3.06 ERA as a staff. The Rebels have tallied 200 total strikeouts while limiting opposing batters to just a .206 average. Tuesday night starter Josh Mallitz has punched out nine batters in 6.2 innings while allowing just a pair of walks.
