Lane Burroughs quotes
Opening statement:
"You can't control the weather, and we say it all the time, worry about the things you can control and don't worry about the things you can't. Weather is one of those things you can't, so you can't get too sped up about that. It was unfortunate that Fincher couldn't finish his game. He was up and down too many times. We had three delays on Friday. We've got too much to play for and he's got a bright future ahead of him, so we're not going to put anybody in jeopardy to win a ballgame. After a few times, you just can't run him back out there. And then the next day, there's no way. We're not going to do that to him. We felt good about our situation. We were up 4-1, and we felt like Cade punched a guy out on his first pitch but didn't get the call, and they got energized. The guy drew a walk, and you felt their dugout come alive and we just got outplayed the rest of the game. I was very proud of our guys bouncing back in game two the way we came back after getting behind. That's a tough place to play, and they have a good team with some very good players. They played well this weekend, and I'm proud of our guys for coming back and responding. Wells had the big grand slam. Bates had the big double, and that kind of took the energy out of them. I thought yesterday we could've got one game in, but it did rain a ton. It's Miami, so you don't know what the weather is going to do. It's just part of the climate down there, and it just happened to flood the field. You don't want to put your players in jeopardy either. It would've been a sloppy game, and we're heading down the home stretch navigating toward the end of the year. I hope we've got a lot of postseason ball in front of us. You don't want somebody to slip and lose a really good player for the year. It was unfortunate we didn't get to play, but we can't control it. We'll move on and glad we were able to come back and win game two. We look forward to playing LSU tomorrow night and then UTSA this weekend. There's a lot to play for, and I know our guys will be ready to get back out on the field and compete."
On this year's senior class:
"These guys, especially these six seniors that have stuck with us and played and practiced out at a high school for two years, it would be icing on the cake [to host a regional]. I'm glad that the conference awarded us the conference tournament because we'll get to play at home, and it'll be good to play in front of our home crowd. Obviously, we're now at 100% capacity, so hopefully we can pack that place out and it'll be electric. You can't even imagine what it'd be like hosting a regional. It would be great for those guys. They've stuck with us, and they've been through a lot. They all have their degrees, and they were free to go anywhere they wanted or even move on from baseball. They all stayed, and they're all having good years for us minus Fagan due to his unfortunate injury earlier this season. Our guys play hard, and it's one thing as a coaching staff that gives us a comforting feeling. You know our guys are going to bring it. We may not win, but for the most part, our guys are ready to play and compete every time out there."
On Tuesday's game at LSU:
"I told Coach [Paul] Mainieri the first time when we had beaten Air Force 18-1, and then we jumped out on LSU 6-2, and boy, they withstood it. They had just gotten beat by Air Force and then put the beatdown on us. It was pretty impressive. They withstood the initial jump that we had and then kind of took us to school. They're making their run. Coach [Mitch] Gaspard and I were talking about it. They're making their run like they always do. You can't count them out. They have some young, very talented players, and they're trying to navigate college baseball in the Southeastern Conference as well. It's the best league in the country, and they're starting to hit their stride. They've got to play for as well, and it's a big RPI game for both teams. They're playing really well, and they went on the road and beat Ole Miss on the road. They won that series and should've swept them. They then won the series at Auburn this past weekend, so they're playing a lot better. Their freshmen are seasoned now, and anytime you walk in that ballpark you better be ready to go. It's just a different animal. I respect that. I appreciate it, and I know our guys will be ready to go."
