RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech baseball head coach
Lane Burroughs spoke with the media Wednesday. He recapped LA Tech's weekend in its first-ever time as an NCAA Regional host and the season as a whole.
Lane Burroughs quotes
Opening statement:
"When the season started, we were practiced out at Ruston High and Memorial Gym. We didn't start the season at our home stadium, and then it all culminated in hosting the conference tournament. It was a great year, with lots of ups and downs and peaks and valleys like most seasons tend to be. We kind of had a theme from the start with the guys of 'leave a legacy.' Be that team that future teams look back and go 'that's the team that got it going.' They went out and did it, and I couldn't be prouder of a group of young men and what they were able to accomplish and the ride they were able to take me and our coaches on. Looking forward to building on this season. I'm very proud of our guys. They left it all out on the field. I think we created something. Our fans, from our student body to our season-ticket holders to our single-game buyers and the people who were out there for the first time ever, we created something and some tradition that I hope carries on for years to come."
On how special it was to host the conference tournament and NCAA Regional in Ruston:
"It was special. You don't really have time to take it all in, and you don't have much time to get on social media, but there really isn't much time with all that's going on. I'm slowly but surely starting to realize what we did and starting to see the feedback from other people and seeing what it means to Ruston and our university, our department and our program and Northern Louisiana as a whole. When you're in the middle of it, you don't really take it all in, but now that I've had time to sit back and think about what it meant, yeah, it was phenomenal. In one of our early chapels, nobody was really saying anything about why we play this game, but I said, 'I want to bring people joy.' If you look at our crowd, they were happy and having a good time and enjoying themselves. I thought our players did that. They brought people joy and a reason to cheer, and that's enough if people come back and if we've created something, that's good enough for me."
On what players who return next year have learned from the past two weeks of postseason baseball:
"They've learned how hard it is to get to a Regional, much less host one. You've got to play well all year. When you're not a Power Five school, you have to do more. You have to be extra special to not only get to a regional, but obviously to host one. And when you get into one of those, then it's anybody's ballgame. If you look at NC State, they didn't start off to well with some injuries and COVID issues, but my goodness, if there's a better team or hotter team right now than them, then I'd love to see it. Getting in the winner's bracket [in a Regional] is so important. It's really hard to come out of the loser's bracket, and our guys learned that now, but they also saw how close they were. Sometimes when you think about Omaha and the College World Series, it feels so far away, but essentially, we were four wins away from being in Omaha. Hopefully our guys learned how hard it is to get here. You have to work extra hard to get to a Regional, but once you get there, you're not that far away from the promised land."
