Battles Shoots 70, Leads Bulldogs in Round One at Fallen Oak

SAUCIER, Miss. – Hunter Battles shot a season-low 70 (-2) to lead Louisiana Tech in round one of the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Fallen Oak Golf Course.
The fifth-year senior finished day one tied for sixth among the star-studded field that features eight teams ranked in the top 100 in the country and three in the top 10, including No. 1 Auburn.
Battles got off to an incredible start, registering an eagle on the first hole, a 596-yard Par 5. He would follow that up with four birdies, sandwiched in between two bogeys, to shoot 33 on the front nine. His lone birdie on the back nine was his third on a Par 5, this one the 575-yard No. 13, to ultimately finish with a 37 on the back nine.
He was not the only LA Tech golfer to get off to a great start. All five Bulldogs shot Even par or better on the front nine, helping the team charge to the front of the pack with as much as a four-shot lead at -8 at one point.
The 'Dogs did not have as much success on the back, ending the first round in a tie for sixth with UNLV after shooting 291 (+3). Mississippi State made a late surge to take the lead at 276 (-12) followed by Auburn with a 282 (-6). LA Tech is in a crowded pack as 3-9 are within four shots of each other.
Sophomore Riley Hnatyshyn shot a 34 on the front with four birdies and was at 3-under after another birdie on the Par 3 No. 14, but three consecutive bogeys dropped him to a 72 (E) and in a tie for 19th overall.
Freshman Jake Plumb shot a 74 (+2) while fifth-year senior Lake Juban posted a 75 (+3) for the final two scores counted for LA Tech. Senior Will Patrick, playing as an individual, is tied for 25th after registering two birdies and three bogeys for a 73 (+1).
