Preview: LA Tech vs. Nicholls State Series

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech and Nicholls State face off in a three-game weekend series at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

ABOUT LOUISIANA TECH (2-2)
LA Tech split the four-game opening series with BYU. The Bulldogs came back from a 5-run deficit in game two to pick up their first win of the season, 8-6. The 'Dogs also won the series finale, collecting six extra-base hits and getting 12 combined strikeouts from their three pitchers to win, 10-2.
 
Junior first baseman Dalton Davis registered a team-high five hits in the series against the Cougars, record­ing at least one hit in all four games. He batted .313 while tallying a team-high five RBIs.
 
Landon Tomkins was great in relief for the Bulldogs, pitching the final innings of both wins over BYU. He al­lowed zero runs on two hits while striking out four. Also electric out of the bullpen was Alec Sparks who went 4.0 innings in game two versus the Cougars, striking out nine in the process (including six straight).
 
Philip Matulia provided the long ball for the Bulldogs, sending two over the fence in two of the three games in played versus the Cougars. He came into his senior year with 19 career home runs (17 over the last two seasons).
 
LA Tech is in the midst of a seven-game home stand to open the 2023 season. The Bulldogs will play 10 of their first 12 games (and 15 of their first 20) at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
 
ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE (3-2)
Nicholls State opened the 2023 season by winning three of four games against Lindenwood, outscoring the Lions 23-8.  The Colonels then played a midweek game at South Alabama, falling 5-4 to the Jaguars.
 
The Colonels were picked to finish sixth in the Southland Conference preseason poll after tying for fourth in Mike Silva's debut season as head coach.  Nicholls State is coming off its first winning season since 2017 and are presented by four first-team preseason selections in Edgar Alvarez, Parker Coddou, Xane Washington, and Tyler Theriot.
 
Washington and Alvarez have each tallied a team-high seven hits this season and an OPS over 1.000.  Meanwhile, on the mound Theriot picked up one of the Colonels wins by going 5.0 innings with only two hits and zero runs allowed.
 
THE SERIES
LA Tech leads the all-time series over Nicholls State, 15-14.  The Bulldogs lost to the Colonels, 5-4, last season in Thibodaux, which was the first time the two teams had faced off since 2011.  The last time LA Tech and Nicholls State played a weekend series was in 2005.
