SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Louisiana Tech's
Zoie Epps made quick work of her first match but then lost in three sets Thursday in the Round of 16 of the ITA Conference Masters Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Â
Epps played simple, efficient tennis in her Round of 32 matchup versus Patrycja Niewiadomska of Northern Arizona. The junior won 12 of the 13 games, taking it 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the next round where she would take on Marina Skegro of Charleston Southern.
Â
It was a marathon of a match that lasted two-plus hours. Epps got off to a strong start, building a 3-0 lead before Skegro closed out the set by winning six of the next seven games to take it 6-4.
Â
The Norman, Oklahoma native found herself down 5-4 in the second, but broke serve to ultimately force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Epps was dominant, winning seven of the eight points to force a third set.
Â
Ahead 3-2 in the third, Skegro made another run, winning four straight games to outlast the Bulldog 6-3.
