Preview: LA Tech At #12 Oklahoma

The Bulldogs face the Sooners in Norman for the first time in 35 years.

NORMAN, Okla – The Diamond 'Dogs (9-7) are set for their first top 20 ranked opponent in 2025, facing the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (14-1) on Wednesday, March 12 at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.

Wednesday's contest marks the first time the Bulldogs and the Sooners take the field together since 1993, when OU blanked the 'Dogs 2-0 At the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles on February 27, 1993. The last time Tech faced the Sooners in Norman goes back to March 26, 1990, with OU winning a 7-6 battle.

LA Tech is seeking its first non-conference road win over a ranked opponent since 2024, when the Bulldogs defeated UL-Lafayette 7-2 in Lafayette. The 'Dogs are also looking for their first road win over an SEC opponent since beating Ole Miss in Oxford, 6-5, in 2023.

Cade Patterson has become a breakout player for Lane Burroughs' offense, leading the team with four homers and is tied with Michael Ballard for the most RBI on the team with 14 each.

Previewing the Sooners
Oklahoma enters the contest as the 12th-best team in the nation, per D1 Baseball's Top 25 release on Monday. The Sooners are led by head coach Skip Johnson, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the OU baseball program. He has led the Sooners to two 40-win seasons since 2022 and six total winning seasons, with four NCAA Regional appearances and a College World Series championship series appearance against Ole Miss in 2022.

Johnson holds a career record of 244-154.

Jason Walk leads the Sooners with a .385 batting average and six doubles. He is one of three players with at least seven stolen bases this year, having seven swipes on 10 attempts. Trey Gamble has a team-best eight stolen bases in as many attempts with Dawson Willis going 7-7 thus far when stealing.

Easton Carmichael leads the team with five homers, 17 RBI and 40 total bases. Jaxon Willits' four homers are the second-most, with him and Carmichael being the only two players for OU with multiple homers this year.

Cade Crossland is the anticipated starter on the mound for OU. He is a 6-foot 1-inch southpaw with a 1-1 record through three appearances and one start already this year. The Rockwall, Texas native has 12 strikeouts through 8 2/3 innings, yet has allowed eight runs on eight hits and seven walks.
