Series History: LA Tech leads 76-35 (since 1972)
The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after suffering a series sweep to #10 Southern Miss at home. Tech struggled to get going offensively at the plate, being outscored by the Golden Eagles 25-5 throughout the weekend. It was the first time the 'Dogs have been swept at home by a non-conference opponent in the
Lane Burroughs era and has not occurred since March 4-6, 2005, when Tech dropped all three games of the series to Oklahoma State.
Tech faces Arkansas State for the first time since the 2019 season, when the 'Dogs swept the Red Wolves in a three-game weekend series at the Love Shack. The 'Dogs have not suffered a home loss to ASU since April 22, 2000 when they took the series opener, 11-4. Since 1972, the Bulldogs lead the all-time series with a 76-35 record.
Casey McCoy has become one of Tech's hottest bats as of late, hitting .421 with a 1.108 OPS. Both of the freshman's home runs came during the Southern Miss series and is currently tied with
Sebastian Mexico at 16 hits for the second-most on the team behind
Colby Lunsford's 17.
Lunsford saw his 10-game hitting streak snapped after an 0-3 performance at the plate on Saturday. Despite a struggling weekend going 2-11 in the last three games, the graduate third baseman is still batting .386 with a 1.301 OPS, 14 runs scored, eight doubles, four homers, 10 RBI and 37 total bases.
Previewing the Red Wolves
Arkansas State enters Tuesday and Wednesday's contests with a 9-3 record, suffering losses to #6 Arkansas, Eastern Illinois and then-#18 Ole Miss. The Red Wolves suffered a 1-0 loss to the Razorbacks after taking a comfortable 12-4 win in Fayetteville to open up their two-game midweek clash.
ASU suffered a 3-2 loss to Eastern Illinois at home to open a three-game series before clinching the weekend with an 11-3 win in the Saturday game and a 9-2 win in the series finale.
The Red Wolves are coming off a series sweep against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, outscoring the Golden Lions 28-5 through three games including a 10-0 7-inning run rule in Game 2 of the series.
Ashton Quiller and Lane Walton have been two of the top run producers in the Red Wolf lineup. Quiller is batting .347 with 14 runs, six doubles, two homers and 11 RBI and is one of five players on the roster with a 1.000+ OPS. Lane Walton has been the muscle for ASU, batting .306 while slugging .918 with 15 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, seven homers and 19 RBI. Walton and Quiller have been immaculate as well on the basepath, combining for seven steals on seven attempts.
Derek Martinez is coming off a hot weekend at the plate, batting 5-6 in the last two games of the series against UAPB, including four runs scored on the weekend with a double and an RBI. The freshman utility player currently leads the team with a .375 average with just seven starts in 10 games played this season.
