Preview: LA Tech at South Alabama Weekend Series

The Bulldogs face the Jaguars for a three-game series in Mobile for the first time since 2000.

MOBILE, Ala. – The Diamond 'Dogs are set to take on the South Alabama Jaguars in a three-game series at Stanky Field in Mobile. LA Tech returns to Mobile for the first time since the 2000 season, when the 'Dogs won two out of a three-game series that season.

Tech looks to snap a dismal five-game losing streak after facing two of the hottest mid-major teams in college baseball, with Southern Miss currently sitting at No. 1 in RPI and Arkansas State at 35. The 'Dogs have not faced a losing streak of this length since last season, and have not lost five-straight at home since 2014.

Despite the recent offensive struggles at the plate, the 'Dogs have three batters in Casey Mccoy, Colby Lunsford and Sebastian Mexico who are hitting over .320 at the plate entering the weekend. McCoy holds a team-high .364 average with seven runs scored, two toubles and two homers, while Lunsford and Mexico are both tied for the most base hits on the team with 17 apiece.

Lunsford carries a 1.171 OPS with him through 14 starts at third base along with eight doubles, four homers and is one of three Bulldogs with double-digit RBIs. Both Lunsford and Mexico have the longest hitting streaks on the team at 10 games, with both being snapped during the Southern Miss series.

The Jaguars won the series the last time the two clubs faced off in Ruston during the 2025 season, taking two of the three wins. It was the first time the 'Dogs and the Jaguars took the field together since 2001, when they faced off in two games played during the Sun Belt Tournament in Lafayette. Prior to the tournament, South Alabama took two games in a three-game series earlier that season in Ruston.

Previewing the Jaguars
South Alabama is the third-straight Sun Belt opponent for the Bulldogs entering the weekend, bringing in a 10-3 record and a four-game winning streak. The Jaguars cruised to an 11-1 win over in-state opponent UAB in Montgomery on Tuesday following a sweep over West Georgia, when South Alabama outscored the Wolves 30-11 through three games.

Brennon Wright is one of the top hitters in the country going into the series, batting .511 for the fifth-best average in Division I. The junior infielder also leads South Alabama with 16 runs and a stellar OPS of 1.240.

The Jaguars carry plenty of run producers throughout their lineup, with five players having at least 10 RBI through South Alabama's 13 games thus far. Blake Guerin leads the charge with 16 along with four homers, four doubles and 13 runs scored with a .333 average. Stewart Puckett and Wright each have four stolen bases to lead the team and combine for eight of the team's 18 total swipes this season.

Daniel Gonzalez is one of the Jaguars' projected starters in the weekend rotation against the 'Dogs, carrying a 1-0 record with three starts while carrying a team-best 1.59 ERA. The junior righty is the only pitcher for South Alabama with at least 20 strikeouts, fanning 21 on the season.

Mitchell Heel is projected to be the series opener starter on the mound for South Alabama, bringing with him a 2-0 record through his three starts and an ERA of 4.20. The fifth-year righty has 15 innings allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks, along with 13 punchouts and holding opponents to a .204 average at the plate.

Ryland Bozenhard is expected to make his first start of the season and just his third appearance. With no pitching decision to his name, he holds an ERA of 6.75 through 6 2/3 innings of work, allowing five runs on 10 hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
