Bulldogs Defeat Cougars to Open UNO Tourney

Louisiana Tech earned its third victory, sweeping Chicago State 3-0 at Baxter Arena by scores of 25-23, 25-8 and 25-16 Thursday afternoon.
OMAHA, Neb. – Louisiana Tech earned its third victory, sweeping Chicago State 3-0 at Baxter Arena by scores of 25-23, 25-8 and 25-16 Thursday afternoon.
Tyra McKinnie paced the squad with 10 kills on .600 hitting, her second double-figure outing for the Bulldogs. Emerson Traylor and Sydnee Carter combined for 30 of the Bulldogs 37 assists. Louisiana Tech's .310 hitting percentage is the highest on the season so far.
The Bulldogs faced their toughest challenge in the opening set, never leading by more than four points. The score would be tied late at 21-21, but the bulldogs ended the game on a 4-2 run. Kylie Rodriguez won the set with her first kill of the match. The Bulldogs won the set despite trailing .088 to .152 in hitting percentage.
Louisiana Tech carried that momentum into the second set, quickly building a lead and never allowing Chicago State to get closer than four points after the Bulldogs took control.
Louisiana Tech led 15-4 at the media and rattle runs of 7-0 and 5-0 in the set, ultimately winning 25-8. Zahri Gillispie, Taylor Woods and Tyra McKinnie all registered three kills, with nine Bulldogs registering at least one.
The Bulldogs then raced out to another large lead at the set three media timeout with a 15-6 advantage over the Cougars. Chicago State made a push late, but could not surmount the Bulldog advantage, ending the set with a 25-16 Louisiana Tech victory. McKinnie dominated, netting four kills on seven attempts and registering a block.
With the victory, Louisiana Tech improves to 3-1 on the season and continues its opening-weekend trip in Omaha and will face the host university tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. CT.
