Scott Mattera completed his first season at the helm of the Louisiana Tech volleyball program in 2025, laying the foundation for a competitive rebuild marked by measurable progress on and off the court.
In his first season at the helm in 2025, Mattera guided the Bulldogs through a year of transition and growth, leading LA Tech to a 9-21 overall record while improving the program’s RPI by 28 spots from the previous season.
The Bulldogs found success on their home court, finishing 2-1 at the Bulldog Bash with victories over Jackson State and ULM. One of the highlights of the season came in a 3-0 sweep of New Mexico State inside historic Scotty Robertson Memorial Gymnasium, marking LA Tech’s first matchup in the facility since 2013 and snapping a 23-match losing streak to the Aggies. The Bulldogs delivered their most efficient offensive performance of the season in the match, hitting .376 as a team.
LA Tech also earned a dramatic five-set win over Jacksonville State, closing the decisive fifth set on a 15-5 run to secure the victory over the Gamecocks.
Under Mattera’s leadership, four Bulldogs earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors, recognizing excellence both on the court and in the classroom. Among them was Jailen Hurley, who also earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Academic Team, becoming just the second two-time All-Academic selection in program history.
Mattera spent the previous six seasons at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. During his tenure, he compiled a 113-42 overall record, including a 70-8 mark in conference play, winning four Red River Athletic Conference regular season championships and two tournament titles. His teams reached the RRAC Championship match in all six seasons.
In 2024, Mattera led OLLU to a conference runner-up finish in the regular season and its second appearance in the NAIA Tournament, defeating regular season champion Texas A&M–Texarkana in straight sets in the RRAC Tournament final. The Saints set multiple school records that season, including assists (1,453), digs (1,995), and solo blocks (122), while also finishing with the second-most kills (1,519) and third-most total blocks (195) in program history.
The 2023 squad captured a fourth consecutive RRAC regular season championship with a 15-1 conference record and advanced to the conference finals.
In 2022, the Saints went undefeated in RRAC play at 16-0, winning 17 straight matches during a dominant stretch and finishing 21-5 overall after reaching the conference championship match. The 2021 season saw OLLU go 20-5 and claim the RRAC regular season title, while producing multiple individual award winners including Player of the Year, Setter of the Year, Attacker of the Year, Defensive Specialist of the Year, and Freshman of the Year.
In his COVID-shortened 2020 season, Mattera led OLLU to both a conference regular season and tournament championship while advancing to the NAIA National Tournament First Round. The Saints finished 11-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
During his first season in 2019, OLLU posted a 19-7 record and reached the RRAC Tournament final.
Mattera’s teams at OLLU also earned the NAIA Scholar Team Award in each of his final three seasons, reflecting consistent academic success alongside athletic achievement.
Prior to OLLU, Mattera spent one season as an assistant coach at Bellevue University, helping the Bruins reach the national tournament, while also contributing nationally through PrepVolleyball.com by observing and reporting on elite collegiate programs.
He previously served six seasons as head coach at Concordia University-Nebraska (2012-17), where he led the program to its first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2015 and earned Great Plains Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. He compiled a 97-94 record, transforming a program that had previously won 11 or fewer matches in four straight seasons. His Concordia teams earned a top-25 national ranking, produced three honorable mention All-Americans, and consistently achieved team GPAs above 3.5 while earning six AVCA Team Academic Awards.
Mattera also served as an assistant coach at Montreat College, helping guide the Cavaliers to a 25-14 record and an NAIA National Tournament berth in 2011.
He began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at the University of Toledo, where the Rockets earned notable wins over Michigan, Creighton, and Ball State during a Mid-American Conference Tournament upset run.
Mattera previously owned and operated Synergy Sports and Fitness in Toledo, a 60,000-square-foot volleyball and training facility, from 2004-06.
His high school coaching career included successful stops at St. Ursula Academy and Notre Dame Academy, where he won multiple city championships, district titles, and earned Coach of the Year honors while developing numerous collegiate athletes.
Mattera earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Toledo in 2001, graduating with honors, and later earned a master’s degree in liberal studies with a focus on the sociology of sport from Toledo.
