Dr. Billy Bundrick Field
On April 25, 2019, the home of Louisiana Tech Softball – Lady Techster Softball Complex – for almost 30 years was destroyed by an EF3 tornado.
Â
While the 2019 team still went on to win the Conference USA regular season and tournament title, several questions were being asked. Where would the new facility go? What would it look like? When would it be ready?
Â
All of the answers were revealed in November of that year in a press conference as University officials announced their vision for the new softball facility, which would move to a new location – from the corner of Tech Drive and Alabama Avenue to part of the parking lot just north of the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex.
Â
In March of 2020, construction officially began with the goal of having the facility ready for the 2021 season.Â
Â
That goal was coming closer and closer to a reality when on Feb. 5, 2021 it was announced that the new softball field would be named Dr. Billy Bundrick Field, named in honor of the highly-decorated orthopedic surgeon who gave more than 40 years of his professional career to his alma mater.
Â
Four days later, the Bulldogs had their first practice on the new field. Then on March 5, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards cut the ribbon that officially opened Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.Â
Â
That night, after nearly two years between home games on campus due to the tornado, LA Tech opened the facility with a 6-3 victory over Tarleton State. A little over a month later on April 10, the Bulldogs played host to No. 1-ranked and eventual national champion Oklahoma.
LA Tech would go on to record a 7-10 home record during the inaugural season at "The Billy."Â Under first-year head coach Josh Taylor in 2022, the Bulldogs were nearly unbeatable at home after compiling a 19-4 mark, ending the season with a 12-game home winning streak including an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Southern Miss in the regular season finale to clinch the Conference USA regular season title.
The home winning streak extended to 15 games in 2023, the longest in program history. That season, the facility had a sold-out capacity crowd of 1,100 watch LA Tech take on No. 15 LSU. Then at the end of the season, the facility hosted the 2023 Conference USA Softball Championship, the first time hosting a league tournament since 2013.
The Bulldogs matched their home victories in 2024 after going 16-6, highlighted by a 5-3 win against UL-Lafayette which was the program's first victory over the Ragin' Cajuns since 1998. The program put together another winning season at home in 2025, going 12-8 on their home field.
The first-class facility will host to the CUSA Softball Championship again in 2027.
Â
Total capacity of the facility is 1,000 including standing room only. There is a fixed seating capacity of 500 with a mix of chair back seating and bleachers, as well as a first base turf berm area for fans to bring chairs and the Kennel student section in the right field grass berm.
