Phillips, Alexander Named WAC Athletes of the Week
RUSTON, La. ? Louisiana Tech track and field athletes Ayanna Alexander and David Phillips were named the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Monday by the league office.
Alexander posted an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 42-3 ? in the triple jump at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational to take first place. The senior is the reigning WAC champion in the event edged out Ruston native and LSU all-American Tina Harris at the competition. Trackwire ranked Alexander No. 11 last week in its national rankings of triple jumpers.
Phillips was named the male athlete of the week after helping the distance medley relay to a first place finish at the LSU event while also posting a second place finish individually in the 800 meters.
Phillips, Stefan Malmqvist, Jamaal London and Kinsey Dinnel clocked a time of 10:14.54 in the distance medley relay, bettering second place UL-Lafayette by over 30 seconds.
Phillips ran a 1:56.99 in the 800 meters to come in second place.
Louisiana Tech returns to the track in two weeks at Arkansas on February 12th in their final tune-up prior to the Western Athletic Conference Championships that will take place February 24-26 at Boise State.
