Tech Golfers Third After Two Rounds of Bulldog Classic

CHOUDRANT, La. - Louisiana Tech shot a two-round total of 600 and currently sits in a tie for third place after the first two rounds of the inaugural Bulldog Classic hosted at Squire Creek Golf Course Monday.

Head coach Jeff Parks team leads 11 other teams in the 15-team event, including a host of Top 100 ranked programs including 88th ranked Oklahoma, 46th ranked Rice and 96th ranked Stephen F. Austin.

The Bulldogs trail 54th ranked Mississippi and 47th ranked Southeastern Louisiana and are tied with 71st ranked New Orleans after 36 holes with the third and final round set for Tuesday morning.

"I thought our guys went out today and battled some pretty strong winds and managed the course okay," Parks said. "As you can see by the scores, the course was tough today. I thought we might have pressed a little in the morning round and cost ourselves some strokes but overall we've put ourselves in good position heading into tomorrow."

Tech was led by Clinton Shepard who shot a two-round total of three-over-par 147 to tie for fifth place out of 87 competitors. Hayden Stephens was right behind his Bulldog teammate with a four-over-par total of 148 as he sits in a tie for ninth place.

After shooting a six-over-par 78 to open the event, senior Matthew Harvey fought back to shoot an afternoon round of 73 and sits in a tie for 22nd place with a 151. Cody Santone shot 154 and is tied for 31st while Jonathan Bale shot a 156 to tie for 40th.

Tech also had five student-athletes playing as individuals in the event, including Patrick Blunt (78-74=152, T24th), Sam Forgan (78-78-156, T40th), Joel Thelen (78-81-159, T57th), Cody Blankenship (81-80=161, T66th) and Timothy Byrd (89-82=171, 84th).

Southeastern Louisiana's Cedric Scotto leads the individual competition with a two-round total of 141 after firing the low round of 68 during the afternoon.

Mississippi leads the event with a 582 followed by Southeastern (588), LA Tech (600), New Orleans (600), Oklahoma (601), Rice (609), Kansas (615), Houston (617), Jacksonville State (617), Missouri State (617), Stephen F. Austin (620), UTSA (631), Centenary (638), Austin Peay (640), Nicholls State (642) and McNeese State (642).

The 15 teams will tee off Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
