Santone Stellar in Second Round of WAC Championships

May 4, 2010

HENDERSON, Nevada - Former Parkway High School prepster Cody Santone shot a second round three-under-par 69 to lead the Louisiana Tech golf team at the Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at the 7,332-yard, par-72 Rio Secco Golf Club.

Santone helped Jeff Parks team fire a second round team total of one-under-par 287 as LA Tech remains in sixth place at the three-day event, trailing tournament leader New Mexico State by 23 strokes. The Aggies are 19-under-par as a team after shooting 14-under Tuesday.

Santone's day included five birdies and two bogeys, including a birdie on the par 4, 472-yard finishing hole of the day as he sits in a tie for 10th place.

Jonathan Bale shot a one-over-par 73 and currently sits in a tie for 15th place. Bale bogeyed three of the first six holes of the day but finished strong, birding the 17th and 18th holes to finish out his round.

Freshman Hayden Stephens had the second best round of the day for Tech, firing a one-under-par 71 which included four birdies. Sitting at two-over-par through the first seven holes, Stephen was two-under over the final 11 and is tied for 23rd.

Senior Matthew Harvey shot a three-over-par 75 and is currently tied for 33rd place. Harvey's second round included a team-high five birdies but he also added four bogeys and two double bogeys. He did finish the final four holes two-under.

Junior Clinton Shepard had four birdies on the day but a pair of bogeys and double bogeys spoiled what could have been a sub-par round as he shot a 74. Shepard is tied with Harvey and a number of other golfers for 33rd place.

New Mexico State golfer Timothy Madigan followed up an opening round 64 with a four-under-par 68 and is the clubhouse leader at 132. He has a four shot lead over Nevada's Scott Smith who is at 136.

In the team completion, New Mexico State (557) leads followed by Nevada (561), San Jose State (565), Fresno State (570), Idaho (575), LA Tech (580), Boise State (590), Utah State (592) and Hawaii (600).

The event will conclude Wednesday with the final round. Tech fans can follow all of the action with live scoring at www.golfstat.com.
