RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech junior forward Rachel King was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference on Monday.
"I am obviously happy for Rachel," head coach Kevin Sherry. "Her roll in the team is to score goals and it is nice to see her finishing off a higher percentage of her opportunities now."
King took just eight shots on goal to score six goals while leading Tech to a 3-0 record this week. The O'Fallon, Mo. native scored twice in Tech's 8-0 win at Grambling State, once in a 3-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and three times in a 4-0 win over McNeese State. King's hat trick on Sunday was the third of her career and tied her own school record for most goals scored in a game.
"Any individual award is a reflection of the whole team," Sherry said. "Rachel's teammates perform their roles to a high level also and give Rachel the opportunities she needs in order to score. The team is playing so well at the moment and this award reflects that."
Half of King's goals were assisted by senior Kiva Gresham, currently the school's all-time leader in assists.
It is the first weekly award won by King and the second won by the Lady Techsters this season as goalkeeper Caitlyn Updyke won the WAC Defensive Player of the Week award on Aug. 23. Idaho goalkeeper Liz Boyden won this week's WAC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Tech has won four-straight games and will take a 5-2 record into Friday's home match against Texas State at 3:30 p.m.
