GRAMBLING, La. - Will Alvis allowed just one run in a predetermined three inning start and Louisiana Tech pitchers combined to fan 14 batters as the Bulldogs knocked off Grambling State, 7-3, Wednesday night at Tiger Field.
Louisiana Tech (10-11) jumped on the scoreboard with four runs on three hits in the first inning off of Grambling State starter, Joel DeLeon. Colby Johnson led off the game with a walk then advanced to third as Kyle Roliard belted a double down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position for Mark Threlkeld. With a 1-0 count, Threlkeld singled down the right field line scoring both Johnson and Roliard.
Threlkeld scored on an RBI groundout from Clint Ewing and the Bulldogs added another run courtesy of DeLeon's fourth wild pitch of the inning.
DeLeon (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in just 1.0 innings of work.
The Tigers scratched across a run in the bottom half of the inning as Adrian Turner sent an RBI single into center field that scored Matt Mitchell. Despite putting runners on second and third, Alvis escaped the jam by striking out Brian Knuckles to end the inning.
Tech added a pair of runs in the third as both Johnson and Roliard posted RBI singles to give the Bulldogs a five run lead.
In his final inning of work, Alvis loaded the bases with just one out. However, the senior right-handed pitcher induced Knuckles to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Alvis (2-0) finished the night allowing one run on six hits while recording two strikeouts in a predetermined 3.0 inning start.
The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh as Threlkeld drove in Ryan Gebhardt with a sacrifice fly. The Tigers answered in the bottom half of the inning as Turner homered to right field off of Graham Meyers and added another run in the ninth off of an RBI single from Turner.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday night at 6 p.m. CT as Tech squares off with UTPA in game one of a three-game set at J.C. Love FIeld.
Notes: Louisiana Tech improves to 15-3 all-time against Grambling State... Tech has won the last 13 meeting between the two schools...The win snapped a nine-game losing streak in road contests... The Bulldogs improve to 4-3 on the season when recording a big-inning (four-plus runs)...
