SAN JOSE, Calif. - Caleb Dudley tossed three no-hit relief innings and Tech rallied to take game one of the doubleheader, 5-4, but the Spartans responded in the second game by scoring in the bottom of the ninth and won in the 10th inning with a walk-off wild pitch Friday evening at Municipal Stadium.
Game 1 (Louisiana Tech 5, San Jose State 4)
Following last night's shutout, the Bulldogs went to work quickly on Spartan starter, Eric LeBaron. The senior right-hander walked Kyle Roliard to start the game and followed that by hitting Austin Hedges to put two runners on base.
With one out, Alex Williams ripped a two-run single back up the middle scoring both Roliard and Hedges. With two on and two outs, freshman Colby Johnson gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead with his second RBI of the season as his single scored Williams.
LeBaron did not factor into the decision as he allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and hitting a batter in just one inning of work.
The Spartans answered in the bottom half of the inning as Jeb Stefan allowed back-to-back singles followed by a walk to load the bases. After a strikeout, Stefan issued consecutive walks to put SJSU on the board. After his second strikeout of the inning, Hedges made a spectacular defensive play to strand the bases loaded.
San Jose State would even the score at three runs apiece with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom half of the second and took the lead as Tim Quiery scored on a wild pitch from Stefan in the fifth. However, sophomore reliever Caleb Dudley would enter the game with two runners on in the fifth and escaped the jam as he recorded three-straight outs to end the threat.
Stefan worked 4.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits while issuing a career-high six walks to just four strikeouts.
Although his season-long 10-game hitting streak came to an end, freshman Ryan Gebhardt led off the sixth inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a balk from Johnny Melero. Roliard followed with an infield single and Gebhardt scored on an error by the shortstop to even the score at four runs apiece.
Tech then took the lead as Joey Ford ripped a single to right center that scored Roliard and gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead. Melero (2-2) was charged with the loss as he allowed two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Dudley then worked the final two innings for the Bulldogs and did not allow a hit as he picked up his third win of the season. In 3.0 innings of no-hit relief work, Dudley fanned two batters and did not allow a walk.
The win snapped a nine-game road losing streak against the Spartans and was Tech's first win in San Jose since March 25, 2006.
Game 2 (San Jose State 3, Louisiana Tech 2)
After tossing three no-hit innings and 37 pitches in the first game to earn the win, Caleb Dudley got the nod for his second career start in the second game of the doubleheader.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Dudley missed on a 2-2 pitch to Danny Stienstra as he homered to left field to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. After that, Dudley was lights out on the mound as he allowed just one run on one hit while striking out three and walking just one batter in 3.0 innings of work.
Freshman Ben Carlisle relieved Dudley and was solid as he threw three shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out two batters.
Colby Johnson led off the top of the fifth with a single through the right side and Kyle Roliard drove him in with a two-out single to right field to even the game. Tech then took the lead in the top of the seventh as Will Alvis went opposite field with a single to right that scored Johnson, who reached on a one-out single to center.
Coming out for his third inning of work, Dan Breazeale allowed three-straight singles as San Jose State tied the game at two runs apiece. After an intentional walk to load the bases with no outs, Will Alvis entered the game and escaped the jam as he retired the next three Spartans in order.
In the top of the 10th, John Austin fanned two Bulldogs and did enough to earn the win in just one inning of work.
In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Rodriquez reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After falling behind in the count, Alvis was wild to the plate the Spartans were able to score on a walk-off wild pitch to the game.
Alvis (2-1) was charged with the loss as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Louisiana Tech (19-20, 4-7 WAC) will look to split the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. CT as Mike Jefferson takes the hill for the Bulldogs.
