Final Stats

RUSTON, La. - UT Arlington used a five-run fifth inning to propel the visiting Mavericks to a 7-1 victory over Louisiana Tech in the first game of the series Friday night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.

Louisiana Tech led 1-0 after the fourth inning after an RBI double by left fielder Sam Alvis plated Tyler Qualls in the bottom half of the inning. UT Arlington took back the lead in the top of the fifth by scoring five runs off three hits - two doubles - to lead 5-1. The Mavericks added two runs in the sixth off a two-run home run by catcher Greg McCall.

"Their kid did a great job on the mound and he kept us off balance all night," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "We have some work to do and have to keep working and grinding. We have to come out here tomorrow and be ready to fight against a good UTA team."

Starter Phil Maton (4-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs - all earned - off seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Maton walked two Maverick batters and struck out five on the night. James Ferguson came on in relief in the sixth inning and gave up one earned run off two hits while striking out four in 2.1 innings. Dakota Doss and Laetten Galbraith also saw action on the mound for the Bulldogs to close out the final innings of the game.

Right hander Brad Vachon (3-2) pitched nine innings of four-hit baseball to earn the victory while allowing just one run and striking out 10 in a complete game effort by the UT Arlington junior pitcher. Vachon allowed just one extra-base hit in the win which was an RBI double by Alvis.

The Mavericks were led at the plate by McCall who was a perfect 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored to help lead UT Arlington to a victory. Designated hitter Matt Shortall, Darien McLemore and Travis Sibley each added a double for UT Arlington, while Justin Copeland added a triple for a total of nine hits for the Mavericks.

Alvis led the Bulldogs at the dish with a 2-for-4 effort with a double and an RBI, while Taylor Terrasas, Tyler Qualls and Kyle Arnsberg each added a base knock in the loss.

The series resumes at 3 p.m. tomorrow at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston. An Easter Egg Hunt will start at 2:30 p.m. for all children in attendance.
