Trio of Bulldogs Selected in MLB Draft

June 8, 2013

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech baseball had three players drafted on the third and final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft with Sam Alvis, Ryan Gebhardt and Taylor Terrasas being selected by professional clubs Saturday.

Three Bulldog players are the most selected in the draft since 2011 when Tech sent three players to play professionally from that season's roster.

With Alvis, Gebhardt and Terrasas being picked in today's draft, head coach Wade Simoneaux has now coached 21 student athletes that have been selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft over the course of his 11-year tenure.

"I am happy for all those guys who were able to live out their childhood dreams of being drafted today," Simoneaux said. "But, I still have to talk to Alvis and see what his plans are on coming back or signing."

Junior infielder Ryan Gebhardt was drafted as the 14th pick in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while junior left handed pitcher/outfielder Sam Alvis was selected as the sixth pick in the 21st round by the Miami Marlins. Senior infielder Taylor Terrasas wrapped things up for the Bulldogs after being picked 29th in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds.

Gebhardt appeared in 36 games for the Bulldogs in 2013 and started 34 as Tech's shortstop. The Monroe native hit .289 with 41 hits, nine doubles, a triple and 17 runs batted in during his junior campaign.

Alvis was selected as a left handed pitcher after seeing time both on the pitchers' mound and in the outfield for Tech this past season. At the plate, Alvis hit .269 in 38 appearances with eight doubles, a team-leading four home runs and 13 RBI. As a reliever for the Bulldogs, the Jasper, Texas native posted a 4.71 earned run average in 17 appearances out of the bullpen for Tech.

Terrasas led the Bulldogs in batting average in his senior season with a .292 batting average after starting 53 of the 54 games he appeared in as an infielder for Tech. He also led the team in hits (59), doubles (16) and total bases (75) in his final season as a Bulldog.
