LA Tech Caps ITA Regionals with Consolation Championship

Oct. 19, 2015

AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" Louisiana Tech capped a tremendous weekend at the ITA Southern Regionals on Monday morning with Jazmin Britos winning the consolation championship of the singles A draw at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on the campus of Auburn University.

After outlasting two opponents on Sunday in third set super breakers, Britos was clicking on all cylinders in the consolation finals, taking down Allie Sanford of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-3.

It was an impressive victory for the junior against an opponent who was ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation coming out of high school.

"Jazmin played with a lot of guts this weekend," head coach Chad Camper said. "This tournament was full of great players and after her first round loss, she really stayed focused. She had to win each match with a different game style and was smooth under pressure."

It was a perfect ending to a weekend that saw LA Tech claim two titles in the singles B draw with Zoe Chen and the doubles B draw with the tandem of Manoela Chiacchio and Taly Merker.

Alba Escalona Perny joined Britos in also winning the consolation finals which came in the B draw.

Of the eight main draw and back draw winners for doubles and singles combined, the Techsters won four of them.

In the end, the team outperformed last season's regional by winning eight more singles matches (18 to 10) with victories over players from LSU, Mississippi State, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tulane and more.

"Just when I thought we could not perform better than last year's ITA, the players came through in a big way," Camper said. "For this program to win four finals out of eight is very impressive. There were many great players and teams, and after this weekend we are in the same sentence with those programs.

"I am proud of the effort and the willingness to fight for each point. There were many times I thought we could lose, but the players came back in a big way."

LA Tech will look to take this performance to their final fall tournament which is Nov. 5-8 in Orlando, Florida at the USTA Clay Court Invitational where they will face other invited teams from conferences such as the SEC and the ACC.
