May 19, 2015 RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech senior pitcher Phil Maton and freshman catcher Brent Diaz have each earned All-Conference honors, announced by Conference USA Tuesday, after the two Bulldogs saw the 2015 season come to a close last weekend.
Maton, a former Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, was voted second team All-Conference for his performance on the mound, while Diaz impressed in his first season with the Bulldogs to earn a spot on C-USA's 11-member All-Freshman Team.
After starting on the mound for LA Tech for four straight years, Maton wrapped up his decorated Bulldog career last weekend against Marshall. As a senior, he ranked third on the team this year with a 3.68 earned run average with four wins on the bump, while also leading all Conference USA pitchers with 90 strikeouts in 15 appearances and 88 innings.
The Chatham, Illinois native leaves LA Tech with the school record for career innings pitched (358.2) and is second all-time in Bulldog history with 324 career strikeouts. Maton is also ranked in the Top 10 in program history for career wins (21) and most appearances by a pitcher (67). He held opposing hitters to a .252 batting average in his four seasons as a Bulldog.
A native of Miami, Diaz appeared in 46 games as a freshman with 44 starts, including 31 of which came behind the plate. He ranked third in C-USA after gunning down 15 runners on the base paths, while totaling 37 hits, four doubles, two triples, four home runs and the fourth-most RBIs on the team with 24. Diaz recorded nine multiple-hit games and five multiple-RBI games to close out his rookie season.
All Conference USA awards were voted on by a panel of each head coach, each team's media relations director and a media representative from each city.
