LA Tech Drops Series Finale, 5-4, to UT Arlington

RUSTON, La. - Down by one run with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Louisiana Tech's rally fell short as UT Arlington defeated the Bulldogs, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.

LA Tech (5-2) held a one-run lead over UT Arlington (4-4) through five innings, but the Mavericks scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead before putting an end to a Bulldog rally in the final frame to salvage the series.

With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, LA Tech had the tying run 90 feet away and the winning run on second with Sean Ullrich at the plate, who scorched a ball right back up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher's mound and straight to the shortstop who flipped a double play to end the game.

Nate Harris (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Bulldogs after giving up the go-ahead runs to UT Arlington in the sixth. Cameron Linck started on the mound for Tech and allowed one run on five hits through three innings.

Adam Meyer (1-0) picked up the win for the Mavericks with 1.1 innings of relief work, while allowing one run on two hits. Daniel James (2) came on in the ninth and stranded three runners to earn his second save of the season.

Both teams got on the board early after a leadoff walk eventually resulted in a 1-0 lead for UT Arlington after half an inning of play.

Louisiana Tech wasted no time responding when Bryce Stark led off the bottom of the first with a single to right-center, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Raphael Gladu and then came home to score on an RBI double by Sean Ullrich to tie the game. Cody Daigle followed up with a single up the middle before Taylor Love scorched a ball that ricocheted off the pitcher to allow Ullrich to come home to lead 2-1 after one inning.

After both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Marshall Boggs led off the inning and crushed the first pitch he saw for a solo home run to left to give LA Tech a 3-1 lead.

UT Arlington put up four runs on as many hits in the sixth to jump out to a 5-3 lead over the Bulldogs, but LA Tech began a comeback in the bottom of the inning to thanks to a leadoff double by Daigle, a single to right by Taylor Love and an RBI ground out by Chase Lunceford to cut the lead to one.

Four different Bulldogs recorded multiple-hit days at the plate as Bryce Stark, Daigle, Love and Boggs each had two hits on the afternoon. LA Tech was out-hit by UT Arlington, 14-10, in the series finale.
