MONROE, La. - Louisiana Tech (11-6) scored seven runs behind a lights out pitching performance by Cameron Linck to clinch a 7-1 victory over ULM (8-12) Tuesday night at Warhawk Field in Monroe for the team's sixth straight win over the Warhawks.
LA Tech relied on the long ball to do most of the damage offensively Tuesday with both Chase Lunceford and Cody Daigle each leaving the yard with two- and three-run home runs, respectively.
On the mound, the Bulldogs held ULM to just two hits, one of which was a solo homer for the Warhawks' only run of the night. LA Tech pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the victory with both Linck and Nate Harris each recording five strikeouts.
"This was a good win for us," head coach Greg Goff said. "ULM has a tremendous team. We were able to come out on top tonight, but it was only a one- or two-run game all the way through until the last inning. I thought both teams played really well. We knew we had our work cut out for us, but they made a couple of mistakes and we got some balls up, so it was a good night for us."
Linck picked up his first win as a Bulldog after allowing just one run on one hit and five strikeouts in five full innings of work against the Warhawks. The junior righthander was efficient as Linck gave up just one walk and threw only 50 pitches in five innings to move to 1-0 on the season.
Harris came on to start the sixth for the Bulldogs and held ULM scoreless on one hit while striking out five in three innings on the bump. Zack Hamilton took over in the ninth and struck out two while not allowing a hit to close out the win for LA Tech.
"Cameron Linck was awesome for us tonight," Goff said. "I thought he was really good. I am really happy for him because he is a guy who has waited his turn and I cannot say enough about his commitment. All of our pitchers did a tremendous job for us. ULM is a really good offensive team and the wind was blowing out tonight, so I am really proud of our guys."
LA Tech wasted no time gaining a lead over the Warhawks as Sean Ullrich led off the game with a single then reached third on a double by Garrett Dodd. Raphael Gladu then came through with a ground ball to second base to advance both runners and put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the top of the first.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fourth when Jonathan Washam led off the frame by beating out an infield single on a sharp line drive off the ULM pitcher. Lunceford then followed up Washam's base knock with a two-run home run to right field to put LA Tech up 3-0 over the Warhawks.
ULM cut it to a two-run lead for Tech in the bottom of the fifth when Jacob Stockton led off the inning with a solo home run to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Bulldogs.
LA Tech officially put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with four runs, including an RBI single by Dodd followed by Daigle's three-run home run to make it a 7-1 lead for the Bulldogs.
Daigle was 2-ford-5 on the night with a home run, three RBI's and a run scored, while Dodd also contributed for the Bulldogs with a 3-for-5 effort including a double, RBI and run scored. Jonathan Washam was 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Lunceford was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's. Raphael Gladu was also 1-for-5 on the night with a double and a run scored.
The Bulldogs host Charlotte in a three-game Conference USA series beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston. Game two of the series against the 49ers is set for 6 p.m. Friday with the finale scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday.
