Box: McNeese 3, LA Tech 1
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Louisiana Tech could not get much going offensively as the Bulldogs dropped a low-scoring affair to McNeese State, 3-1, Wednesday night at Cowboy Diamond in Lake Charles.
LA Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but that was all the scoring the Bulldogs could muster as McNeese State plated three runs in three separate innings to come out on top in the midweek contest. LA Tech dropped to 18-11 overall on the season while McNeese State improved to 20-11 and kept a six-game winning streak alive.
LA Tech used three pitchers on the night as Braden Bristo made the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on just three hits while striking out four in five full innings of work. Bristo (2-4) was charged with the loss after Adam Derouen came on in relief to start the sixth and allowed one run on a walk. Casey Sullivan pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three.
McNeese State sent six different pitchers to the mound Wednesday, but it was starter Bryce Kingsley who picked up his fifth win of the season to move to 5-0 on the year. Kingsley allowed one run on three hits and a walk in three innings. Collin Kober came on in the ninth and closed it out to earn his fifth save of the campaign.
The scoring started early for the Bulldogs after Jonathan Washam ripped a two-out double down the left field line for the first hit of the game before coming home to score on an RBI single by Chase Lunceford to give LA Tech a 1-0 lead over the Cowboys.
McNeese State wasted no time responding as Connor Crane hit a two-out solo home run to left field in the bottom half of the first to knot the game at 1-1 after one full inning of play.
In the third, McNeese took a 2-1 lead over LA Tech after a lead-off single by Will Fox who advanced two bases on a wild pitch and ground ball before coming home to score on an RBI single by Ricky Ramirez.
The Cowboys extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Dustin Duhon led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on two wild pitches, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Shane Selman.
LA Tech attempted a late comeback when the Bulldogs had two runners on with just one out in the ninth, but Kober was able to get a strikeout and fly ball to end the threat and strand two to finish the game.
Lunceford drove in the only run of the game for the Bulldogs as the third baseman was 2-for-4 at the plate in the game. Cody Daigle also recorded two hits in the loss, while Sean Ullrich, Jonathan Washam and Taylor Love each had one base hit for LA Tech. The Bulldogs out-hit McNeese, 7-4, and stranded five runners.
The Bulldogs now return to Ruston to begin a nine-game home stand starting with a three-game series against FIU this weekend. The series begins at 6 p.m. Friday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
