Box Score: LA Tech 14, ULM 4
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech plated 14 runs on 12 hits and took advantage of 10 walks by ULM pitchers, while Braden Bristo struck out six in five-plus innings on the mound in the Bulldogs' 14-4 victory over the Warhawks Wednesday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
Although ULM took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was short-lived after Chase Lunceford responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run, his sixth of the year, to quickly give LA Tech a 2-1 lead after one frame. A solo homer by Jonathan Washam extended the lead to two in the fourth before the Bulldogs put up a five-spot in the fifth and combined for six runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The Warhawks were held scoreless from the second inning until the ninth when Will Daniels hit a three-run home run to cut Tech's lead to 14-4.
"It was really great to see Braden [Bristo] out there tonight throwing strikes and mixing his breaking ball in there," head coach Greg Goff said. "We have a lot of respect for ULM. Monroe is a good hitting club and I was glad to see Braden settle in after giving up one run in the first and then putting zeros up the next four innings."
Bristo (4-5) started and picked up the win for the Bulldogs on the mound after the junior held ULM to one run on four hits while striking out six and walking two in 5.1 innings of work. Nate Harris came on in relief in the sixth and allowed a hit and struck out one in an inning and two-thirds before Graham Ahlrich pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning for LA Tech. Christian Marquez pitched the ninth inning for the Bulldogs and gave up three runs on five hits while striking out one.
LA Tech improved to 28-14 overall on the season while the Bulldogs have won six of their last seven and 10 of their last 12 games heading into this weekend's three-game Conference USA home series against Middle Tennessee. ULM fell to 17-29 with the loss, while the Bulldogs have now won seven straight games over the Warhawks.
During LA Tech's five-run fifth inning, the Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate while recording five hits, including RBI base knocks by Jonathan Washam and Raphael Gladu and a sacrifice fly by Brent Diaz to take an 8-1 lead over ULM. Tech added four more in the seventh three walks, a pair of singles by Diaz and J.D. Perry, and a sacrifice fly ball by Garrett Dodd to make it a 12-1 advantage for the Bulldogs.
LA Tech added its final two runs of the night with a two-out rally in the eighth after the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, walk and single by Gladu to set up Chandler Hall's RBI walk and Dodd's RBI single through the left side to take a 14-1 lead over the Warhawks.
Hall extended his reached-base streak to 12 games after a 1-for-2 night at the plate with an RBI, two runs and four walks against ULM. Jonathan Washam drove in three runs after going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, while Lunceford was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, walk and two runs. From the lead-off spot, Gladu put together a 2-for-4 night with two RBI's and two walks, while Perry also recorded two hits in three at bats with two walks. As a team, LA Tech recorded 12 hits on the night.
ULM's Jacob Stockton led the Warhawks by going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, while Daniels' home run in the ninth drove in three for the visitors from Monroe.
