Sept. 6, 2016 RUSTON - Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland announced Tuesday that Amanda Stone has been hired to lead the Lady Techster tennis program.
Stone recorded an 86-20 record and four straight Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament during her four seasons as the head coach at Northeastern State (Okla.), a Division II program located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
She replaces Chad Camper who accepted a head coaching positon at Tennessee Chattanooga after three seasons in Ruston.
"We are very appreciative of the job that Chad Camper did, and we wish him and his family the best," McClelland said. "As with every head coaching search, this was a very important hire for us. We were meticulous with the process, and ultimately, I am very happy with the end result. I think Amanda Stone's record of winning on a very high level on the Division II level will translate over to our program.
"Amanda's goals and philosophy line up perfectly with ours within the athletic department and with the overall vision of the University. She is inheriting a very talented group of young ladies. I am excited to see what the future holds for this program under Amanda's leadership."
The two-time MIAA Coach of the Year returned the RiverHawks back to national prominence, as the team shot up the rankings all four seasons Stone served as head coach. She posted at least 20 wins in each of her four years, which included four straight trips to the NCAA Championship Round of 16. She also led NSU to three-consecutive MIAA Regular Season Championships (2014-16).
"First I would like to thank President Les Guice, Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland, and the entire search committee for this fantastic opportunity," said Stone. "I'm excited to get started with this team that has already established a solid foundation, and I'm ready for the chance to move the program forward. I am very impressed with Ruston, and I am proud to be a part of a university that strives for both academic and athletic excellence."
Stone boasted two ITA All-Americans, one ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year, one ITA Central Region Player to Watch, one MIAA Player of the Year, and two MIAA Freshmen of the Year during her time at Northeastern State. Of the 15 players who competed in the program since Stone took over in 2013, 14 earned All-MIAA honors at least once. Those 14 student-athletes amassed 38 all-conference accolades.
She took over the reins of a program that was unranked at the time and led it to the school's first ever Top 10 ranking which came at the end of the 2016 campaign.
Off the court, the RiverHawks were one of the nation's top academic programs. Over the last four years, NSU touted one CoSIDA Academic All-American, four CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees, eight ITA Scholar-Athletes, one MIAA Academic Excellence award winner, 10 MIAA Scholar-Athletes and 13 members of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Stone inherits a Lady Techster program that returns the nucleus of last year's team that finished 15-7 and earned its first ever Oracle/ITA Collegiate National Team Ranking.
Her hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System.
