Lady Techsters Finish 13th at Mid-Winter Classic

Jan. 15, 2017

JONESBORO, Ark. - After a weekend of action at the Mid-Winter Classic, hosted by Arkansas State University, the Lady Techsters took home a 13th place finish in the crowded and talented field, while also posting a head-to-head victory over Maryland Eastern Shore who entered the event ranked 10th-nationally.

"After having a long break for the Christmas holidays, it is always hard to come back and go to a tournament right away," head coach Matt Nantais said. "We came out Friday a little bit flat and that was because of the break. We bounced back on Saturday and had a good day considering the lane conditions were very tough."

LA Tech was no stranger to the challenge facing them in Jonesboro, as the event featured a field of 18 team, eight of which are currently ranked top-10 in the entire nation.

Prior to bracket play on Sunday, Louisiana Tech posted wins over Lincoln University, Lincoln Memorial University, Drury University and wrapped up play on Saturday evening with the monumental win over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

"Our last match Saturday was against Maryland Eastern shore and it went down to the last bowler on each team," Nantais commented. "Shelby Smith got up in the 10th frame and threw the first strike for us to shut them out."

The Lady Techsters entered Sunday's bracket play as the 14th seed, but fell to Maryville University in straight-games. The first three games of the match were decided by a combined-total of 18 pins.

With a quick turnaround, LA Tech rallied against Drury University, winning 4-2, by scores of 165-140, 158-169, 179-189, 186-114, 198-143, 155-142.

The final match of the tournament came against Jackson State, where the Lady Techsters propelled themselves to the 13th place finish with a 4-1 victory. After dropping the first game, 175-166, Louisiana Tech would win the next four by scores of 213-180, 204-135, 215-171,163-150.

"Our first match Sunday we didn't shoot spares very well and we gave Maryville the match," Nantais said. "But we took the last two matches of the day and ended on a positive note and had our highest score the last game of the tournament. Sarah McComic was put in to the anchor position halfway through our second match and performed very well for us. This weekend she was the most consistent for us and we made major changes to her game just before the tournament. We are definitely going to get back at practice and work on some spare shooting and prepare for our next tournament at Florida A&M."

Throughout the Mid-Winter Classic, Louisiana Tech was led by McComic who registered a top-30 finish overall by bowling an average score of 178.2. Kendall Hickman was right behind McComic with a 35th place finish and an average score of 175.4.

Shelby Smith was the third top-50 performer, at 46, with an average score of 167.4. Just outside the top-50 at 53rd was Kelsey Calzaretta with an average score of 157.8 and Morgan Hall, who immediately followed at 54th, had an average score of 156.8.
