Lady Techsters Conclude Ladyjack Classic

Feb. 14, 2017

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - This past weekend, the Louisiana Tech women's bowling team concluded play at the SFA Stormin' Ladyjack Classic in Nacogdoches, Texas, taking home a 20th place finish, while individually Kelsey Calzaretta registered a top-20 finish overall.

"The competition we faced this weekend, featured some of the best teams and individuals in the country, so it was a great test for our team," head coach Matt Nantais said. "Any time you face an elite level of competition, it serves as a learning experience, so I know our team will be ready to get back to work at practice this week. As a program, there are always things you can do better and we will address those areas, but I continue to see improvement in our team and tournaments like this will only better prepare us as we move forward in the season."

The talented field of 23 teams featured a double-digit number of nationally-ranked programs and after one round of play, the Lady Techsters found themselves in 14th place and ahead of five nationally-ranked programs. Unfortunately on day two, LA Tech would come out of the gate a little slower and enter Sunday's bracket play as a 19th seed.

In the opening round of bracket play, Louisiana Tech faced off with Maryville University and fell in six games, dropping game six by a mere three pine, 194-191. That would pit the Techsters against Jackson State in the next round.

Against the tigers, Louisiana Tech battled seven games and ultimately came out victorious with a 199-165 victory in a winner-take-all game seven. The Lady Techsters were now set to face Texas Southern in the final match of the tournament.

Battling Texas Southern, the Lady Techsters put up a 209 score in the first game to take a 1-0 lead and after three games, LA Tech lead 2-1. Unfortunately, Jackson State would win the next three games to win it, 4-2.

Louisiana Tech was led by Kelsey Calzaretta who had a top-20 performance thanks to an average score of 204.8, which ranked 17th in the tournament.

Shelby Smith registered a top-60 finish with an average score of 185.2. Just outside the top-60 was Sarah McComic who registered an average score of 178.8.
