RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech bowling team defeated Jackson State in a rematch of last year's tournament championship to win its second straight Sonic Boom Invitational Championship.
Kaitlyn Eder and
Ashley Channell finished first and second in the traditional section of the tournament, totaling up averages of 224.60 and 212.40, respectively. Both were all-tournament choices. Eder also earned tournament MVP honors.
"Overall, we had a pretty good weekend. We bowled really well over the first two days, and I am pleased with how we continued to support each other all weekend," said Tech head coach
Matt Nantais. "We came out really flat and lost to Jackson State In first match today, but we picked it up against Texas Southern in the second match. We need to find a way to be consistent through all three days of competition with a big test coming up next week in North Carolina."
As a team, Tech notched eight straight wins with a 199.4 average over the first two days of the tournament, setting the Lady Techsters up with a chance to win on Sunday. Tech dropped its first Baker match 4-2 (169-193, 185-171, 204-200, 153-148 193-195, 244-217) to the hosting Tigers, but bounced back to defeat Texas Southern in five (206-168, 168-173, 187-180 223-181, 212-140).
Defeating Texas Southern set the Lady Techsters up for a winner-take-all rematch with Jackson State. The first match ended in a tie at 192 all before the Tigers took three of the next four to build a 3-1 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Techsters rebounded. Tech won 235-199 and 214-180 to force a five frame roll off. The Lady Techsters squeaked out a 118-107 win to bring home the title.
The Lady Techsters are back in action Nov. 15-17 at the Stallings Invitational, which is hosted at North Carolina A&T.
