Bulldogs Rally to Complete Weekend Sweep of Lions

HAMMOND, La. – The Louisiana Tech baseball team followed the same script from its Friday and Saturday victories, and rallied back from a four-run deficit en route to a 12-8 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon from Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The resilient Bulldogs (3-0) completed the weekend sweep over the Lions (0-3), scoring 40 runs across the three game-set. The Bulldog offense outscored Southeastern 25-8 in the 4th-6th innings throughout the three-game set, handing the Lions their first home series sweep in nearly a decade (2010 – Northwestern State).

Tech also became the first team to ever score 40 runs in a series against Southeastern, since the Lions became Division I in 1981.

Once again, Tech failed to get a quality start from its starting pitcher as Logan Bailey did not make it out of the fourth inning, and was charged with eight runs (all earned) on nine hits.

Tech began the game with three runs in the first after third baseman Tanner Huddleston's RBI single and then a throwing error from shortstop Cody Grosse scored two more.

Then in the second, Tech added a run to increase the lead to 4-0 after Taylor Young's sacrifice fly scored Steele Netterville, who led off the inning with a walk.

Southeastern did all of its damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring three in the third and five in the fourth, to race ahead to an 8-4 advantage. The Lions utilized a pair of RBI singles from Grosse and Schimpf along with a balk from Bailey to draw to within one at 4-3 after the third.

Then, in the fourth, the Lions sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs behind five base hits (four singles and a double) chasing Tech starter Logan Bailey. Junior transfer Bryce Fagan entered the game for Bailey and issued a walk and hit two batters with the bases loaded, before Quinton Logan made his first appearance of the season and got the catcher Manola to ground out, ending the inning.

Trailing 8-4, the Bulldog offense wasted no time in slicing the deficit in half. Taylor Young worked a one-out walk, and then came around to score after a two-base error by the right fielder Pilutti on a single from Bates. Two batters later, designated hitter Shelton Wallace singled up the middle to score Bates, cutting the Southeastern lead down to two at 8-6.

Logan came back out for the bottom of the fifth and worked a quick, scoreless bottom of the fifth, before the Tech offense roared to life in the top half of the sixth.

Mason Mallard and Steele Netterville began the frame with back-to-back singles. Then, Chris Clayton lifted a sac fly to center, scoring Mallard. Hunter Wells (walk) and Taylor Young (HBP) both reached, loading the bases, before Parker Bates slapped an RBI single to right, scoring Netterville. Wells, who tried to score from second on the base hit from Bates, appeared to slide safely under the tag at home, but was called out by the home plate umpire. With two runs on the board in the inning, Tech added to its tally behind an RBI infield single from Shelton Wallace and a 2-RBI single to left from Mason Robinson.

When all was said and done, Tech had regained the lead at 11-8 behind five runs on five hits in the inning.

Logan again held the Lions scoreless, working around a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, and got a big double play ground ball to end the threat.

Tech redshirt freshman Jonathan Fincher got the call for Logan in the top of the 7th and was nothing short of impressive in his first collegiate action.

The left-hander faced 12 batters across the final three innings of the game, allowing just one hit and two walks, while striking out three and picking up the three inning save in the process.

Logan (1-0) earned the win as the third Tech reliever to earn a winning decision this weekend.

Centerfielder Parker Bates led the Tech offense with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. Junior Hunter Wells extended his team-high hitting streak to 13 games dating back to last season, while Shelton Wallace (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Mason Mallard (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 walk) added multi-hit efforts. Taylor Young exited the game after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, but reached base three times and scored three runs.

The Bulldogs return to action this Tuesday, taking on UL-Lafayette in the 2019 home opener from J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
