FORT WORTH, Texas -- Louisiana Tech dominated the field on the opening day of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships Fort Worth Sectional at Cityview Lanes on Saturday.
Seventh-ranked Louisiana Tech would finish the day with a 6,772 total for 32 Baker games, leading second with 391 pins.
Only a 10-pin and a 2-4 in back-to-back frames cost the Bulldogs a perfect game to open the event, and they finished with a 267. They followed that up with 208, 253, and 176 for 904 to take the lead after the first set. Ottawa University (KS) was no match, as they finished with a 739.
Scores dropped during the second set, but LA Tech was still in the plus. A couple of splits started the set slow with an 182, but the Bulldogs bounced back to roll a 224 to get back over even. They would close out the set with 215 and 212 for an 833. Morning Side University kept it close, but their opening game of 168 ultimately kept them from putting up a big number and would finish at 809.
Tech found their mark again and shot their highest set of the opening round with a 951. Games of 233, 216, 234, and 268 would give them the easy win over No. 14 Newman, who shot 718.
The Bulldogs finished the morning round with a 942-804 win over Lindenwood. Starting with 197, 254, and 212, Tech shot a 279 in the final game, leaving a 9-pin in the ninth. The Bulldogs went into the lunch break with a 3,630 total, nearly 500 pins ahead of second and almost 300 pins ahead of the top men's team.
After lunch, Tech picked up right where they left off, taking down UAB 861-857. The Bulldogs took an early lead with a 206 in the first game, but the Blazers took the lead behind a 245 in game two. LA Tech stayed consistent with a 215 and followed with a 219 and 221 to take the set.
Tech dropped their first set of the event but stayed in the plus with an 806. Rolling consistent games of 227, 192, 194, and 193, the Bulldogs couldn't overcome a 235 by William Penn University.
The Bulldogs would be below even for the final two sets of the day but would maintain their lead. Tech would shoot 753 to Spring Hill College's 738 and 722 to 777 against Wichita State in the final set.
