FORT WORTH, Texas — Louisiana Tech picked up four wins before falling in the final match on the first day of the Bulldog Classic at Cityview Lanes on Friday.
 
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs (68-38) started the day with solid scores to beat Saint Anselm 958-788. LA Tech had games of 187, 203, 189, 188, and 191.
 
The second match had Tech against Conference USA foe No. 8 Sam Houston. The 'Dogs would take a 15-pin lead after both teams struggled to find a mark in game one. That quickly changed as both teams made adjustments. The Tech lead would continue to increase with a 200 and 198 in the next two, compared to 187 and 193 by the Bearkats. SHSU won game four 200-194 before the Bulldogs closed the match with a 222-177 win to take it 974-892.
 
Tech struggled early again with a 167, only falling behind by four pins against Morgan State. The Bulldogs would again find their mark with a 215-170 win to take a 41-pin lead. After 188 and 189, that lead would grow to 92 heading into the final game. LA Tech would drop the final game but hold on to a 920-871 victory.
 
The winning continued but opens started to cause a problem. After jumping ahead by 11 after game one, LA Tech had a clean 211 to increase the lead to 77. Three opens in the third helped Prairie View A&M slice the lead down to 40. The Bulldogs regrouped and closed the set with 184 and 181 to win 907-795.
 
The final set was a struggle to get anything going through the first four games, with a high of 167. A 197 in the final game would not be enough, falling to Central Missouri 894-805.

LA Tech finished with a 4,564 to sit in third and are just 55 pins out of first.
