SMYRNA, Tenn. — The Louisiana Tech bowling team picked up four wins on the opening day of the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt at the Smyrna Bowling Center on Friday. The 11th-ranked Bulldogs are in 11th place with a 4,712 pinfall.
Â
Down 25 heading into the final game, Louisiana Tech (75-42) rolled a 225 to come away with a 978-941 victory over No. 12 Sacred Heart to open the tournament. The Bulldogs didn't strike until the seventh frame in the opening game but would only fall behind by 18 pins. That quickly changed as they found their mark to roll a 223 in the second. However, the Pioneers would increase their lead with 226. The lead would change hands at the end of games four and five before Tech's comeback in the fifth.
Â
LA Tech's inconsistent shooting resulted in an 888-873 loss to No. 18 Maryland Eastern Shore. The 'Dogs had two opens in the first game but could still throw a 182 and have a 34-pin advantage. That lead would slip away over the next three games, as Tech would have eight open frames. The Bulldogs would still give it a run in game five with a 190, but that would not be enough.
Â
The Bulldogs got back into the win column against Oklahoma Christian, 924-894. However, it would still come with nine opens. LA Tech took a 10-pin advantage after game one. The 'Dogs had games of 195 and 190 over the next two, but the Eagles would cut the lead down to three. Tech took control in the fourth game with a 206, increasing the lead to 49. A 179 to close out the set would be enough for the win.
Â
Louisiana Tech had their best set of the day in a 997-953 win over No. 10 Maryville. The Bulldogs opened up with a 223 to take a 50-pin lead. That lead would remain the same after the Bulldogs rolled games of 201 and 212. They would wrap up the set with a 169, only losing 10 pins, and a 192.
Â
Tech finished the day with a 929-896 victory over No. 25 Emmanuel. The 'Dogs took a 197-170 advantage after game one. They would find themselves in a 30-pin hole after the second and third games. LA Tech would make all that up in game four after a 197 to take the lead back by three. They would open the final game with a turkey and pull away with a 199.
