RUSTON – Left-handed pitcher
Luke Cooley has been named Conference USA's Pitcher of the Week, per the league office's release Monday afternoon.
A native of Waynesboro, Mississippi, Cooley had his best performance on the mound on Saturday against Kennesaw State since his arrival to Louisiana Tech. Cooley fired off eight no-hit innings in Saturday's win over the Owls with 10 strikeouts.
It was his first 10-strikeout performance since arriving to Louisiana Tech, but his seventh such showing as he posted six 10-strikeout games during his tenure at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss. He was one shy of tying his single-game career high of 11 punchouts that was set during his final season with the Warriors.
The junior recorded the most shutout innings since Cade Gibson posted eight no-run frames against FIU on March 26, 2022. He also had the most strikeouts by a Bulldog since Ryan Jennings fanned 10 batters against Old dominion on May 26, 2022, and was the first Bulldog with at least seven no-hit innings with no earned runs allowed since Tyler Follis against ULM back on March 21, 2018.
Cooley leads the team and is tied for fourth in CUSA with 43 strikeouts on the year with a 3.34 ERA that sits eighth-best in the conference. The lefty also sits among the top 10 in the conference in wins, strikeouts looking, and least earned runs allowed.
Cooley and the Bulldogs return to action when they travel to Baton Rouge to face No. 7 LSU Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. CT before facing UL-Lafayette on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CT.
