Bulldogs Take Rubber Match from Minnesota 5-2

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Five Louisiana Tech batters recorded one RBI to help lead the Bulldogs (12-11) to a 5-2 win over Minnesota (8-16) Sunday afternoon.
Tech starter Josh Barrett (2-1) received the win in the rubber match vs. the Gophers after tossing 5.2 innings while allowing two runs off eight hits. Mike LeBreton earned the first save of his career as well as being the first Tech pitcher to record a save this season as he pitched four shutout innings in relief. Austin Lubinsky was hit with the loss for Minnesota, his second loss of the season.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning the Bulldogs took over the lead with two runs in the second. Designated hitter Will Alvis set the tone for the inning with a leadoff homerun over the leftfield fence. Centerfielder Clint Stubbs then showed off his speed as he sent a line drive shot down the leftfield line and turned what would be a double for most players into a triple. Clint Ewing drove Stubbs in with a sacrifice fly to center to give Tech a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the fifth inning. After a Ewing walk the catcher advanced all the way to third following two ground outs. Ewing was then knocked in with a single to rightfield by Mark Threlkeld. Sophomore first baseman Alex Williams recorded his fifth RBI of the series with a double to left centerfield to up the Tech lead to 4-1. Devon Dageford then drove in Williams for the final run of the inning with his third double of the series.
Holding a 5-2 lead in the sixth, Barrett and the Bulldogs got into some trouble as the Gophers loaded the bases with two outs. However, Mike LeBreton came on in relief and slammed the door shut with a clutch strikeout to end the threat.
Threlkeld, Williams, Dageford, Alvis and Ewing all recorded one RBI for the Bulldogs.
Louisiana Tech returns home next weekend to take on Texas-Wesleyan in a three game series beginning Friday April 2 at 6 p.m. CT.
