CHOUDRANT - Sam Forgan and Jack Lempke recorded red numbers in the opening round of play to lead Louisiana Tech in the first day of the Bulldog Classic hosted at Squire Creek Country Club.
Forgan fired a three-under-par 69 while Lempke added a two-under-par 70 as head coach Jeff Parks Bulldogs shot an opening round team total of three-under-par 285. Louisiana Tech currently sits in second place in the 12-team event, trailing only 45th ranked Middle Tennessee State which shot a 10-under-par 278.
Forgan's three-under-par was the second best round of the day, trailing only Middle Tennessee's Jason Millard who totaled a 68. Lempke's 70 ties him for fifth place as a total of only 13 golfers shot in red numbers on Sunday.
Jonathan Bale shot an even-par 72 for the Bulldogs while Cody Santone and Clinton Shepard both fired two-over-par 74s. Bale is currently tied for 14th while Santone and Shepard are tied for 24th.
Playing as individuals, Tech's Hayden Stephen's shot a 72 while Travis Wilmore totaled a 78 and Patrick Blunt an 81.
In the team standings, Middle Tennessee (278) and Louisiana Tech (285) are first and second followed by Southeastern Louisiana (289), Southern Miss (290), Rice (292), McNeese State (295), Jacksonville State (296), Missouri State (296), South Alabama (297), UALR (308), Stephen F. Austin (314) and Texas State (314).
Tuesday's second round will begin with 8 a.m. tee times. The Bulldogs individuals are scheduled to tee off starting at 8 a.m. while the five members competing in the team competition for LA Tech are set for 11 a.m. starts.
