HONOLULU, HI - Will Alvis hit a solo shot to lead off the fifth but the Hawai'i offense exploded for 10 runs over a span of four innings to knock off Louisiana Tech, 10-2, Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, Alvis blasted his sixth home run of the season to center field on a 1-0 pitch from UH starter, Jarrett Arakawa. Ryan Gebhardt then singled up the middle and Mark Threlkeld and Alex Williams drew a pair of two-out walks but Joey Ford grounded out to short to strand the bases loaded.
Arakawa (4-2) allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking four in 7.0 innings of work.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jeb Stefan walked Jesse Moore on four pitches then allowed Breland Almadova to reach base on a fielding error as Stefan attempted to make a play on the sacrifice bunt attempt. Pi'ikea Kitamura then executed a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position before Stefan walked the next two batters and gave up a two-run single up the middle to Michael Blake that gave the `Bows a 3-1 lead. Mike LeBreton came in to close out the inning and strand three runners on base.
Stefan (4-4) was charged with the loss after tossing 4.2 innings allowing three runs on just three hits and issuing five walks.
Almadova doubled down the left field line then stole third base to lead off the bottom of the sixth for UH. Kitamura then drove in Almadova with an RBI fielder's choice to extend the Hawai'i lead to three runs.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Hawai'i offense exploded for six runs on six hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead over the Bulldogs. Will Alvis added another solo shot in the top of the ninth before Alex Capaul closed out the game with two strikeouts.
Louisiana Tech (17-17, 2-4 WAC) returns to action Sunday night at 6 p.m. CT in game three of the four-game set with Hawai'i.
