Coach Sherry Visits YMCA in Shreveport

Aug. 29, 2012

SHREVEPORT, La. - Even with the 2012 soccer season in full swing, Louisiana Tech head coach Kevin Sherry accepted an invitation from YMCA NWLA athletic director Raymond Lee to visit with parents and coaches in Shreveport on player development and coaching philosophies.

Coach Sherry firmly believes it is important to share and pass forward what you learn, and speaking at this event while also taking questions, was another way for him and his Lady Techster soccer program to help develop the sport within the region.

"Kids in north Louisiana need a stronger base of fundamental skills with which to use as a foundation as they get older," said Sherry. "Too much emphasis in youth soccer is put on winning and as a result too much emphasis on the biggest, fastest and strongest kids who can kick the ball the furthest."

Sherry's philosophy is geared much more towards skill development so that kids can have a better opportunity of playing soccer at the high school and college level.

"Between the ages of four and 12 the emphasis should be on technical skills and enjoyment of the game and less emphasis put on winning and the physical side of the game," said Sherry. "It is important to get this message across to our local soccer communities."

Since 1988 the YMCA of northwest Louisiana has done much more than just provide kids with an opportunity to play sports and work out. More importantly, they have been teaching values to kids, strengthening and supporting families and creating safe environments that allow individuals to develop healthy minds and bodies.
