RUSTON, La. - Victor Lange gave the nation's top-ranked golfer a serious challenge in the final round of the Lamkin San Diego Classic Tuesday but fell one stroke short of a major upset and a chance at an individual title.
Washington's Cheng-Tusng Pan - currently ranked as the No. 1 individual golfer in the country - trailed Lange for several holes during Tuesday's final round but Pan would eventually leapfrog Lange and finish in a tie for first with his Husky teammate, No. 79 Corey Pereira.
Lange still shot an impressive 7-under-par (72-68-69=209) for the tournament and beat six other golfers that are ranked between Nos. 16 and 96.
The junior from Johannesburg, South Africa recorded his third top-five finish in seven tournaments so far this season and has posted a 71.3 stroke average through 21 rounds of play this season.
Overall the Bulldogs finished eighth as a team by firing a 25-over-par (300-294-295=889) for the tournament, edging Oregon State by three strokes. Arizona finished seventh by eclipsing LA Tech by one stroke. No. 17 Washington, led by Pan and Pereira, won the team title at 10-under-par 854.
Ben Robinson tied Oregon State's Brian Jung for 44th place as Robinson was 9-over-par for the tournament, carding an even 3-over-par in each round.
Mitchell Haddox and Chuck Spears were among a group of eight golfers that finished the tournament tied for 52nd at 13-over-par. Spears was 3-over-par in the final round while Haddox was 4-over-par Tuesday.
John Lewis Sams rounded out the Bulldog contingent by finishing tied for 75th with a tournament score of 20-over-par.
Louisiana Tech returns to action on March 23-24 as the Bulldogs will compete in the Wallace Jones Warhawk Intercollegiate at the Black Bear Resort in Delhi, Louisiana.
