Louisiana Tech head coach Jeff Jenkins
Opening statement:
"We got off to a pretty good start. I think we were three under par after seven or eight holes. That is what we want. We wanted to get off to a great start. We had some trouble coming in. The wind did pick up. We had a couple of guys hit it into the desert and lost a few shots. Overall, it was not quite the start we were looking for, but I promise we have not shot ourselves out of this thing. I have been to enough regionals to know that the number that makes the top five moves all over the place. If we can have a good day tomorrow, we can give ourselves a shot to get back into contention to make a run."
On the late tee time:
"It is certainly an advantage if you are teeing off first, but those guys earned that. They were the top seeds in our region. They got to tee off at seven. We were about an hour and 20 minutes later. We played our last six holes in some pretty good wind, finishing on the front nine where there is more elevation. We started working our way back getting into the wind off of some elevated tees which was quite a challenge. The guys hung in there."
On Jacob Wyatt:
"I was very impressed [with Jacob's performance]. He has actually been sick the last few days. I made a joke beware of the sick golfer. Jacob did an incredible job. He has brought it over the last few months, playing incredible golf for us. I am so proud and excited for him with his growth as a player. He is certainly carrying his weight. This is something he will be able to draw on the rest of his career just like he did at the conference tournament. Today was a huge round for him."
On the team's mindset going into round two:
"Being at enough regionals, I have seen the numbers move a lot. We have to stay the course, prepare for tomorrow and if we play well tomorrow we can get right back into this thing. The guys seem real upbeat and positive. The energy is good and that is what I want. I want good energy. That gets me excited."
Freshman Jacob Wyatt
On round one:
"I kept hitting it on the line that I wanted to hit it on. We had a great practice round yesterday. I got all of the yardages and clubs that I needed to hit. I stuck to my yardage book and kept hitting it on line."
On the eagle at No. 16:
"I hit a perfect driver down the middle, grabbed a seven iron and I yelled for it to go. It landed about 10 feet short and rolled to within about a foot and I tapped it in for eagle."
On the par fives:
"Our front nine which is the back nine of the golf course, the par fives are shorter than they are on the front and easier to go for. It was easier to attack those starting the day. The back nine was a little bit tougher with the wind."
On finishing the round strong:
"Coach has been telling me all week to keep my head up no matter what and be patient. I was already playing good. Had a little hiccup [on No. 2], ended up making a bad score that I should not have. You can't look back on those. You just have to keep going for it."
On the mindset going into round two:
"We need to just stick to our game plan. No matter what just keep doing what we have been doing all year long. Hit some more range balls and get back to doing what we need to do."
