Sutton Leads LA Tech to Series Sweep over MTSU

Box Score May 8, 2016

Final Stats | Notes

RUSTON, La. - For the first time since 2012, Louisiana Tech completed a series sweep over a conference opponent behind Casey Sutton's second complete game shutout of the season in the Bulldogs' 5-0 victory over Middle Tennessee Sunday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.

Sutton was dominant on the mound for the Bulldogs, only allowing four hits over the course of nine innings to clinch LA Tech's first sweep of the 2016 season and the first conference sweep since May 2012 when the Bulldogs took down San Jose State in Western Athletic Conference play.

LA Tech moved to 31-14 overall and 15-9 in C-USA games after completing the three-game sweep over Middle Tennessee Sunday afternoon.

"You just have to continue to control what you can control and today we broke through [with the sweep]," head coach Greg Goff said. Casey Sutton throws three pitches for strikes and locates. He doesn't beat himself. Jordan Washam made some tremendous plays at second base today and those things helped us get the win today."

Sutton's shutout performance earned the right-hander his sixth win of the season and moved him to 6-0 on the season with a 1.31 ERA. While Sutton was lights out on the mound for LA Tech, the Bulldogs totaled eight hits and tacked on runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to clinch the 5-0 victory over MTSU.

Sutton faced the minimum in five of his nine innings on the bump, while the junior right-hander improved as the game progressed by retiring the last nine batters he faced in the final three innings.

In the fourth, Jordan Washam, Cody Daigle and Brent Diaz strung together three straight singles to set up J.D. Perry's sacrifice fly ball to left field to get the Bulldogs on the board with a 1-0 lead.

LA Tech added another run in the sixth after a lead-off double by Marshall Boggs, a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Washam and a wild pitch by Middle Tennessee reliever Cody Puckett allowed the Bulldogs to take a 2-0 lead over the Blue Raiders.

A pair of walks and two more wild pitches by Middle Tennessee led to a 3-0 lead for LA Tech in the seventh before the Bulldogs added some insurance in the eighth. Jordan Washam singled with one out before Daigle was hit by a pitch which led to both runners scoring and making it a 5-0 LA Tech lead on an RBI single by Diaz and an error by the Middle Tennessee left fielder.

Diaz led the Bulldogs at the plate after the sophomore catcher put together a 3-for-4 effort with three singles and an RBI. Jordan Washam and Daigle also totaled two hits apiece in the victory, while Boggs was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored. Perry drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly while he also scored a run and walked.

LA Tech has a busy week ahead with a pair of midweek games against Northwestern State beginning with a 6 p.m. contest Tuesday in Natchitoches. The Bulldogs will turn around and return the favor by hosting the Demons at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Ruston. Tech travels to Hattiesburg for a three-game Conference USA series against Southern Miss beginning Friday.
