LA Tech (5-2), despite outscoring Troy 19-15 over the weekend, fell in a couple tight decisions with the winning run at the plate in both defeats. The Bulldogs will hope to right the ship quickly against Little Rock (1-6), who most recently dropped a three-game home series to Evansville.
Tech and Little Rock played twice last season, with the Trojans winning both matchups by identical 2-1 final scores.
The Tech offense is off to a hot start in 2019, already scoring 62 runs through its first seven games (most since 2012). Seven Bulldogs boast averages of .295 or better as Mason Mallard (.481), Taylor Young (.462), Mason Robinson (.375), Hunter Wells (.345), Shelton Wallace (.320), Chris Clayton (.304) and Steele Netterville (.296) have made the retiring the Tech lineup a daunting task to the opposition.
Netterville had a breakout week for the 'Dogs this past week, raising his batting average from .214 to .296 after hitting .375 over Tech's four home contests. The sophomore went 6-for-16 from the plate, while slugging a team-best .938, as five of his six hits went for extra bases. He led the team with eight RBI and is now tied for the team lead in the category with nine (Mason Mallard).
Also a bright spot for the Bulldogs early on this season has been the efforts of the bullpen. The nine pitchers Tech has used in relief roles in 2019 have combined for a relief ERA of 1.95. Over 37.0 innings pitched, the bullpen has inherited 24 runners – allowing just five to score. Bulldog relievers have struck out 45 while walking just nine, and have held opponents to a .223 batting average against.
All five of Tech's wins have come from relief pitchers this year as Tyler Follis, Jonathan Fincher, Quinton Logan, Beau Billings and Kyle Griffen have each earned victories. Fincher, Matt Miller and Braxton Smith have combined for Tech's three saves. Smith leads the team with 8.1 innings pitched out of the pen over four appearances. The senior right-hander has struck out 11, while walking just one.
Both teams have yet to announce a starting pitcher for Tuesday's contest.
The game will be streamed live through Little Rock All-Access ($) and will be broadcast on KNBB 97.7 FM and through the LA Tech X Mobile App with Dave Nitz on the call.
