@LATechBSB to Host Southeastern Louisiana
3/10/2020 9:23:00 AM | Baseball
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech will look for a bounce back win in their final game before conference play when they take on Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at Ruston High.
Tuesday's midweek contest will be the fifth of eight games scheduled to be played at Ruston High School this Spring. The remaining three games are all in April (14th - Northwestern State, 21st - McNeese State, 28th - Louisiana-Lafayette).
The Bulldogs were swept for the first time in 2020 in a three-game road series at Wichita State. Tech nearly avoided the sweep by scoring nine unanswered runs on Sunday, but the Shockers walked it off with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
Kyle Crigger will toe the rubber for the Bulldogs on Tuesday. The junior college transfer will be making his first career start after posting a 2.45 ERA in 3.2 innings to open the season. Crigger was sidelined for part of the year with an injury, but returned last weekend against Wichita State
Crigger and co. will likely have plenty of run support from the Bulldog hitters. The 'Dogs lead Conference USA in runs, (126), hits (161), home runs (22), and slugging percentage (.492). The top three home run hitters in C-USA so far this year are all Bulldogs: Parker Bates (7), Taylor Young (5), and Steele Netterville (4). Bates also leads the conference with 24 RBI.
Southeastern will counter with LHP Corbin Bozosi (0-0, 7.20 ERA). This will be Bozosi's first start of the season after tossing five innings in five appearances. The Lions (6-9) are coming off a win in their final game against Central Arkansas. Southeastern lost the series, but avoided the sweep with a Sunday win.
The Bulldogs and Lions met during the first day of Tech's 2020 season. The Diamond Dogs won 2-0 thanks to a clutch two-run single from Adarius Myers in the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyler Follis, Kyle Griffen, and Beau Billings combined for the shutout.
Tech's season will continue this weekend with a "home" series in Jackson, Miss. against Middle Tennessee.

Noting the Diamond Dogs
The Miami-area has been good to Louisiana Tech baseball. Brent Diaz, a member of the 2016 Starkville Regional team and current minor league catcher, came to Tech from the 305 and Bulldog coaches returned to the area to bring in two talented freshman for the 2020 season. Catcher Jorge Corona (.306/.345/.490) and RHP Greg Martinez (1-1, 3.90 ERA) have emerged as key pieces for the Bulldogs as they head into Conference USA play.
2021 will bring plenty of changes for LA Tech baseball, including one in center field, where the Diamond Dogs will have to replace Parker Bates. Over the last three years, Bates has totaled the third most games played and second most at-bats among active C-USA players. This year, Bates leads Tech in home runs, RBI, hits, and extra base hits. He also is just two HBPs away from tying Louisiana Tech's career record with 33 (Brent Diaz - '15-'17).
Louisiana Tech returned the 4th-fewest starts (12.1%) in the nation in 2020 but has handled the transition admirably under pitching coach Mike Silva. Bullpen aces Jonathan Fincher and Tyler Follis made the move to the rotation and Jarret Whorff emerged as one of the top Sunday starters in the nation. As a staff, Tech is 5th nationally and 1st in Conference USA with 4 shutouts. The Bulldogs also lead C-USA in ERA (3.03), WHIP (1.12), and Batting Average Against (.197).
In 2019's regular-season finale, Tech relief pitcher/ironman/swiss-army knife, Kyle Griffen, made the Tech record books, appearing in his 33rd game of the season. The Sulphur, Louisiana, native broke the previous eight-year record held by Caleb Dudley (32 in 2011). For his career, Griffen has amassed 71 appearances on the mound - a ways to go to catch Dudley's career-mark (a Tech record) of 110.
