HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Louisiana Tech (1-6-1) dropped Sunday's contest, 1-0, to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-5-1) at the Marshall Track & Field and Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg.
The lone goal of the match was scored early within the first 11 minutes. Southern Miss' Lorilee Taylor received a pass from outside the 18-yard box on the left side of their attacking end before dishing off to her teammate, Ryan Smith, who was lined up behind her in the box.
Taylor was able to outrun Tech's back line to make the pass to Smith, who took a shot on her first touch and found the back of the net after a deflection from the Bulldog defense.
Tech outshot Southern Miss 4-2 in the first half and 8-6 for the match despite not being able to score.
Ashley Leonhart took a match-high three shots while
Peyton Wiseman and
Madison Pensom each had an opportunity for the equalizer in the final minutes of the contest.
Following Sunday's result, the Bulldogs now have five consecutive matches without a goal which is tied for the third-longest streak in program history. The Bulldogs suffered eight-straight scoreless contests in their inaugural year in 2004 and seven-straight the following year.
LA Tech returns to Ruston for a slate of five of their next six matches to be played at The Mack. The Bulldogs open a three-match homestand with the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. CT.
Head Coach Steve Voltz following Sunday's contest:
"I'm just gutted for our players because they've certainly put in the effort today. It was a good performance, competitively. We created tons and tons of opportunities. When you're in a moment like this, you've got to find a way to dig yourself out and our women are going to be challenged in the next couple of weeks. We have two more games before conference starts to figure out our scoring slump, at least we'll be at home now for a little bit. But, it's nothing wrong with the effort. It's just can we be a little more cold-blooded in front of the goal? We had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper with two minutes left to put it away and make it 1-1 and we may have scored a second one after that. But at the end of the day, nobody's going to feel sorry for us and neither are we. We just have to continue to keep battling and train and compete and go from there."
